I ordered a new water pump impeller and plate for my engine. What is involved in replacing these parts? This is my first boat motor and I have no clue how to do it.
Thanks

To start, a QD10 is a 1949-1950, not a 1960.

You may want a manual to help you through it for your first time. You need to disconnect the shift rod via the oval access port on the leg of the motor. Two standard screws hold it on, once removed you remove the lower 3/8" bolt from the shift rod connector.

You then remove the 4 7/16" screws from the gearcase, and the 1 9/16" bolt from the rear of the gearcase if applicable. After this is removed, the gearcase should drop down. Once removed, find a way to secure it while working. I have a piece of plywood with a horseshoe cut out of it to slide the gearcase in during maintainance.

Once you are ready to begin, remove the old o ring from the top of the drive shaft, pull the 3 standard screws from the top of the impeller housing, then pull it up and off the shaft. Be careful not to lose the impeller key. Pull up the old impeller plate. That is it for removal.

To reinstall, clean the mating surface for the impeller plate, I like to add a little 3M847 to the bottom edge to seal the plate to its mating surface. Then drop the new plate in. Hold the impeller housing upside down, and twist the new impeller into it in a CCW direction. Put the new impeller key in the drive shaft, then lower the housing with impeller down over the drive shaft and screw it back in. Screws get OMC Gasket Sealing Compound on them. Install NEW o ring on top of drive shaft, with marine grease on splines.

If the rubber grommets on top of the housing, and at the top of the water line are worn, they will need to be replaced. The top one can be a bear to get lined up properly. Also to note, if the impeller housing is worn with grooves, it will need to be replaced as well.

It is now time to reinstall the gearcase, ensure that the rubber grommet on top of the housing doesnt pince the water line when installing. Keep the gearcase in gear, and spin the prop while sliding it up to engage the splines. You will need to line up the shift rod at the same time. Re install the 5 bolts, re connect the shift rod, and you are good to go.

If all goes well you will be pumping water.

Good info, the only thing I would add is that a QD 10 has a 4 bolt lower unit and a 1960 QD also has a 4 bolt LU. No 5th bolt present to be removed. So which engine is it a QD10 or a 1960 QD?
