New to me, very little history on this engine. heres the list so far...

Starter turns slow, started to smoke only using pull start...
Nice spark, shocked the crap out of me as my wife cranked
new battery
visual fuel flow in carb (flooded first day)
unknown compression
wiring looks good (no fraying)
fuel lines free of cracking
fuel filter clean

banging my head against the wall, still need to check impeller
any other advise greatly appreciated

No different than any other motor. It needs compression (check it), fuel in the right amount (flooding is not the right amount and indicates a dirty carburetor), and spark at the right time (shocking the crap out of you is not an indicator of good apark)

Get the electric starter fixed. Smoking it only makes it worse. The starter is worth more than the whole rest of the motor..

Welcome to iboats!! Most places that rebuild starters can usually do a marine starter w/o any problems. I would suggest getting a compression gauge

OK, so starter is getting taken care of next week. I now have had it running by squirting fuel mix through the second butterfly valve (throttle valve). It runs fairly rough, never quite makes a smooth idle, then konks out. Getting ready to pull the carb for a thorough cleaning. by the way, gook water flow out, and I know compression test coming. Anything else I should be doing?

Just an update.

Starter replaced, original "PRESTO" in the shop being rebuilt
carb cleaned
new fuel lines
motor "Sea Foamed"

Runs like a CHAMP! Thanks for the help!
