Hi all.
just to start im not that good with motors. i bought a 16 foot alum boat with a 1960 evinrude 75 hp motor on it. the motor looks clean but will not start. the prev owner told me that it had not been ran for 2 yrs but last time it did it was a strong runner. Some friends that are good with motors looked at it and cleaned up the sparkplugs, fluel lines and we put new mixed gas in it. the motor just turns over but will not fire up. took all 4 plugs out and checked to see if there was spark there... and it appears that plug 2 and 4 fire but 1 nad 3 are not. my friend told me that it might be the distributor and thats where he would start. I just want to know what you all think. the gas that was in the motor was very gunky so im not sure if thats the problem.. the motor seems like it wants to start but will not.

Im sure hope we are starting it right, we dont have a manual and I dont want to buy one cause all the money I spend right now:(

when starting it we put it in nuetral and turn the key.. we have tryed full trottle and it kinda wants to start but 1 and 3 plugs dont seem to be doing anything. not sure if there is a certain fireing order.

was also wondering about 2 little lever just below the 2 charb ports... is this timing knobs and do they need to be turned a certain way? also chock is off auto or on... we have tryed all..

thanks, i hope i gave enough info.. please help. i just want to go fishing :)

You have already answered all your questions. It is not going to run till you deal with whatever is making it not have spark, and it is not going to run till you deal with cleaning the gunk out of that carburetor. You have your work cut out for you.

If you cannot afford a manual, your cannot afford the parts to fix it, and if you cannot afford that, you cannot afford the gas it costs to run that thirsty motor. Figure $40 per hour.

Without a Manual you are lost. Get one. If you "can't afford" one you can't afford to boat.

Then go to the Engine FAQs and do "Awakening a sleeping outboard". Then if it still won't start, do "Outboard won't start".

Let us know what you find., and good luck. :)

KG, First clean and gap the points. One set is not clean or set correctly, which is why you do not have spark to two cylinders. The point gap is .020" There are two timing marks on the dsitributor pulley base and one on the pulley. These line up to set each set of points.

See if you can find a service manual at the local library. I cannot remember the initial settings for the low speed and high speed jets(if you have adjustments)

Next remove the carb, disassemble and soak it in carb cleaner. Be sure to remove the two plugs at the base of the carbs, to assure the main jets get clean. Use some spray carb cleaner to help blow the crap out of the passages. Reassemble the carb. Now synch the carb to the spark advance: The carb throttle roller needs to just touch the throttle cam when the timing mark on the dissy pulley matches the notch on the dissy bracket.
