Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

etec will probably have better hole shot....midrange is where 2strokes still trump. that said, i'm more partial to Hondas the more i work on em....designed to be easy to do common maintenance items i'm now up to four honda outboards and 3 OMCs. in those size ranges, i know of no one who isn't really happy with their hondas.

I have not heard a bad thing about either motor, but I sway towards etec for all of the stated reasons, more power, less maintenance. The kiddos aren't going to stay light forever.

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

Thanks there fellas for the motor comments. I will definitely keep them in mind when it comes time!

Ok... actual progress!!!

So... couldn't sleep, so I went out the garage at 3:45am and did some thinking, some drawing and some work!

This line took about an hour to do... ya I know I'm slow... but man it was a lot harder to do than I thought! I want the face piece that I am going to put in place to vertical and yikes! it was weird to draw with the multi-directional angles! I thought it would take 1 minute and cut!

Screwed and glued and built a seat box for the port side at the back. This will hold the battery and anchor. It will also be part of the back plate that I am going to attach for the speedo, tach and switches --- a dash but on the side of the boat!

Since I am now sitting at the back of the boat, I added an extra layer of doubler for under my pedestal. Man that floor board is heavy! Still needs spar. Glued and screwed though...

So... progress. Got some other necessary housekeeping things done in the shop as well this am... ready to roll forwards now!

Have a great Wednesday fellas!!!

Jim - Did you cut the SW? You may be able to cut the sides and bend the front up to form the front of the SW with some trimming. Know what I mean?

Nope... didn't cut it yet... figured if it took an hour to draw a line that I'd better take a second look later on to verify it was right and see if any of you expert dudes had any other thoughts! :D

I hear what you say... I'll take a peak and see... not sure if I am qualified to make that complicated of a cut with a jigsaw! :)

OK, Mr Self Deprecatory Polite Canadian....we've seen your work, so we know your protestations of lack of qualifications are a mite exaggerated. :D

seriously, i've found that to get the best cut with a jigsaw, i do the following: new blade for critical cuts; LED flashlight held in teeth for max light on the cut line; mark cut line in Sharpie pen instead of just pencil for better viz; wear my dang glasses; and hold shop vac nozzle right next to saw foot as i cut to keep line from being obscured by sawfrutz

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

Ok... got bored at lunch and had 30 minutes to kill and went and cut it... I left the strip of metal that rivets into the gunwale...

Clamped in the "keep the water OUT of the boat piece"...

Made a lid for the box....

Sometimes ya just gotta move forward --- as the saying goes.... take a chance and $%*t your pants!!! :D

Works for me...!

Here are the cuts. I simulated use of a jigsaw.

http://

Bend the forward piece up to 90?, trim for a good fit with the gunnel to gunnel cross piece and fit it all together. You will have to make some patch pieces from the cut off tin to massage the angle because the SW narrows toward the bow.

Does that make sense? Anyone else have ideas?

EDIT - Some how I missed the cut, too late for my idea. Are you going to put the front gunnel to gunnel piece in? I guess that's the piece you to rivet to the gunnels? Looks good, Jim.

Ya.. just sorta went and did it! The problem with the fold up idea was that that the because of the angles from the side, it would have left a gap. In theory it could have been done... but the sw is actually a triangle of sorts... so I just figured I would manufacture my own piece! All's good.

Thanks for the thoughts!! :)

Thanks dude! It came out decent enough to work with! Nothing that a little 4200 won't fix! :D :)

Thanks CJ... yup... not light... but the weight is nice and low... so good there! No flex in that floor I tell ya! Should be solid for mounting points.

Got the ok to put a seat up on at the very front for fishing as well.... learned my lesson in the Jupiter with a 4 year old... room matters!!

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

Got some work done this am....

Floor is back in and sealed up. The "winged" piece across the middle of the boat will be trimmed down to fit when the sides are in. It will be the back of the bench seat.

Not finalized yet... but thinking of putting a little dash at the side of the boat with the switches and a speedo where I can see it and reach with a big stretch...

Two choices for the speedo... the first one is the new one that I bought from Budski.

The second is from DozerII (Glen)... If not this one, it will go in the Jupiter along with the matching Tach... Hmmmm.... both are really nice... whatchallthink?????

Cut the 3/4" ply to go under the front metal section of the bow. It is all ready for spar at this point. It will get glued to the metal piece of the bow and screwed to the brackets that are there. I have also figured out how to tie and support the sides of the boat to the bulkhead. I'll take some pic's once I have made them.

Picked up the new ply for the front as it will be 1 solid piece across to support a seat post in the centre. I will double it up in the middle for screwing the seat post into.

So... a little more progress!!

Have a great Saturday!

That second speedo is really cool but it doesn't match your switches. You need some vintage switches to go with that speedo eh:thumb:

Your progress is looking might fine. As far as the speedo . . . . well I am not too keen on them and as a matter of fact omitted one on my project. I have found that speed over ground from the gps varies quite a bit from the speedos especially when there is current in the waters. So I kinda look at them as decorative pieces and pretty much useless as far as accuracy. Now a good tach would fill that spot nicely and provide some great information.

That all looks fantastic Jim. Some awesome woodwork there dude.

I like the white face speedo a little better because I think you'll be able to read it easier. I'm with Willy on not using a speedo, but can you put a rpm gauge on a tiller?

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

Yah, on second thought, for this boat, being a tiller, I'd skip that dash piece all together and just install the necessary switches at the stern seat somewhere. Clean, minimal, ya know.
