Hello. I am new here and I am new to boating as well. I have never owned a boat but my neighbor recently bought a jetski and is going to be getting rid of his old 1960's Fiberglass Lone Star. He is the second owner of the boat and he has owned it since 1980 and stored it at Lake Wallenpaupack in a garage since he owned it. He use to use it to tow around his kids on the lake but now they are grown up and out of the house. I have two young children and I told him that is what I would love to be able to do one day with my kids since both my uncle and friend own second homes near Wallenpaupack.
He is offering to sell it to me for $400. The boat, according to him is in good running order but need some TLC. There are no leaks and the engine still runs strong. We have done a once over of the boat and it does need alot of TLC. The paint is in good shape but it needs a new floor, updating of the gas tank, some electrical, and an overall makeover. The boat is fiberglass and has alot of character! It was funny because two days before I saw the boat I had to go up to Wallenpaupack (we live an hour and a half from the lake) with my buddy to help take stuff to his cabin and I was talking to him about looking for a boat and using it in a few years when our kids get a little older. Then two days later I'm outside and see this awesome looking boat sitting in my neighbors driveway and I go over to talk to him about it and he tells me the whole story and how he plans on selling it for $500-$600 bucks. I told him I would am definitely interested and he said he would be willing to work on it with me to get it to where I want it to be.
The next time I get together with my neighbor I will take some pictures and post them, but for now do you think $400 is a good price or do you think I should ask less? Again, I am a newbie at this but it is a project that I can take my time with to get it where I want it to be. Technically it is water ready already, but I like things to be the best they can be and I am willing to spend the time and a couple thousand over the years to restore it to where it was back in its prime. There are no cracks, holes, etc, in the fiberglass- it is just the floor that scares me a little. Right now there is just a piece of pressure treated ply used as the floor.
The only other info I have on the boat without posting pics is that it is red on the top front, white on the bottom, plastic rounded windshield, sunscreen that goes up over the driver and passenger or folds down, 16', alot of character, Lone Star SkyJack, and it was made to pull water skiers, etc. Pictures to come in a few days. I am serious about this project.
Thanks for any help. Mick
