1960's Lone Star SkyJack?

Hello. I am new here and I am new to boating as well. I have never owned a boat but my neighbor recently bought a jetski and is going to be getting rid of his old 1960's Fiberglass Lone Star. He is the second owner of the boat and he has owned it since 1980 and stored it at Lake Wallenpaupack in a garage since he owned it. He use to use it to tow around his kids on the lake but now they are grown up and out of the house. I have two young children and I told him that is what I would love to be able to do one day with my kids since both my uncle and friend own second homes near Wallenpaupack.
He is offering to sell it to me for $400. The boat, according to him is in good running order but need some TLC. There are no leaks and the engine still runs strong. We have done a once over of the boat and it does need alot of TLC. The paint is in good shape but it needs a new floor, updating of the gas tank, some electrical, and an overall makeover. The boat is fiberglass and has alot of character! It was funny because two days before I saw the boat I had to go up to Wallenpaupack (we live an hour and a half from the lake) with my buddy to help take stuff to his cabin and I was talking to him about looking for a boat and using it in a few years when our kids get a little older. Then two days later I'm outside and see this awesome looking boat sitting in my neighbors driveway and I go over to talk to him about it and he tells me the whole story and how he plans on selling it for $500-$600 bucks. I told him I would am definitely interested and he said he would be willing to work on it with me to get it to where I want it to be.
The next time I get together with my neighbor I will take some pictures and post them, but for now do you think $400 is a good price or do you think I should ask less? Again, I am a newbie at this but it is a project that I can take my time with to get it where I want it to be. Technically it is water ready already, but I like things to be the best they can be and I am willing to spend the time and a couple thousand over the years to restore it to where it was back in its prime. There are no cracks, holes, etc, in the fiberglass- it is just the floor that scares me a little. Right now there is just a piece of pressure treated ply used as the floor.
The only other info I have on the boat without posting pics is that it is red on the top front, white on the bottom, plastic rounded windshield, sunscreen that goes up over the driver and passenger or folds down, 16', alot of character, Lone Star SkyJack, and it was made to pull water skiers, etc. Pictures to come in a few days. I am serious about this project.
Thanks for any help. Mick

Re: 1960's Lone Star SkyJack?

Hello,
What type of engine is on it? If the engine and trailer are in good mechanical condition and he has tittles to all three items $400 is a good price. Negotiating is up to you, he may give it up much cheaper.
The thing to understand with a boat that needs a floor is that it usually will also need stringers and transom rebuild as well. Rot starts at the bottom and works it way up. Water ready to some may mean "everything works", but hull condition and its structural reinforcements may prevent it from being sea worthy. To be a safe family vessel will most likely mean it will first need to be a "project boat". They got a restoration forum here, you should read about soft floors (deck).

Yeh, I have been doing quite a bit of research in the restoration forum and learning about replacing the floor. I have never used fiberglass before so eventually if/when I get the boat I may move this post to that section because I will need help. I will try to take some detailed pics of the floor so I can get your opinions on what it needs. I am going to try and get over to my neighbors today to get a bunch of pictures and more info on it like the engine and such. I will post them asap.

Pictures would be great. I love the lines of those old boats. We can also get a better idea about the overall condition of the vessel.

That is the only reason I am considering buying the boat and working on it- because it has so much character and I can just see in my head the finished product!
Pics will definitely be coming in the next day or too!

I have all of the pictures that I took of the boat this afternoon. How do I go about posting them?
Thanks,
Mick

OK. After doing hours of research on this site I found out that my neighbor was wrong and the boat I am looking into buying is either a 1961 or 1962 Arkansas Traveler Skijack and not a Lone Star. Here is the link that led to to this finding. I found the link on this site- awesome! http://www.fiberglassics.com/arktrav/
I am still trying to figure out how to upload my pictures.

for the life of me I cannot insert my image. I watched the video from this site, set up a photobucket account, reset my images to 640X480, but every time I copy the direct link and then go back to the insert image it doesn't let me paste the link when I press controlV. Did anybody else ever have this problem??? Sorry- I really wanted to post my pics tonight but it looks like I will have to wait until tomorrow- sorry!

That boat is AWESOME! I think it's worth the $400 if the motor runs. Trailer looks decent though I wouldn't want to go much of a distance on those tiny tires. There are plenty of similar restoration threads on here that will show you how to properly replace the stringers, deck, and transom. Very cool boat and well worth the effort to fix up.

Here's a link to your picture album http://s816.photobucket.com/albums/zz86/micks110/

Use the image code link to put pictures right here in your thread.

That boat is very cool. I would pay $400 for it.
It does look like it needs a deck and stringers. If you are willing to put in the work, you will end up with a beutiful vessel.
Thanks for the link ezmobee.

Thanks to exmobee for the link to my boat pics.

Can anyone give me any information on the engine like good/bad, size, powerful or not?
Yeh after looking at it yesterday I realized that the deck would have to come up and I would have to learn how to do fiberglass a floor. In that picture of the floor that is the only area that is bad and the stinger is actually not rotted- it is just a little roughed up from the broken flooring. Where would I begin to start the cutting-how high up the side or floor. I assume I would take the whole floor up because it is week all the way through.
Thanks again!

I guess I will be moving this to the restoration part of the forum soon. We still need to finalize everything, do titles transfers and go from there. Thanks everyone!

Other than deck and stringers that boat looks immaculate to me considering it's age. If the motor checks out I'd surly go $400. That's a neat boat.

If the motor is good theres $400

Trailer good w/ good tires $150-200

Bimini -$150

Sounds like a deal to me.
