They work; in that you can change the pitch but not as effective as a purpose designed prop.Newer Present day variable props are a little more effective.
I've actually sold a motor with one, one time. There's not a whole lot that holds those blades on, that I have seen. Just watch for any metal objects that come flying out of the water.
