Looked at a similar thread but I'm not sure if it answered my problem. I just rebuilt and cleaned the carb and thought I did a good job but I cannot find a setting on my high or low speed jet. At idle it kicks and sputters and then i try and give it more gas and I drop RPM's. I started at 1 turn out for high speed and 1 1/2 on the low speed and tried turning them in and even out and could not find a spot that it liked at all. Then I tried pulling the choke out and it took off across the lake very strong. Please help with any thoughts

when did the problem start?

did you remove everything inside the carb?....... anything that unscrews has to be taken out and cleaned manually.. not just sprayed out with carb cleaner.. its a common mistake.

also check to tmake sure your carbs do not open up until the roller reaches the mark on the advance timing arm......... that will also cause them to sneeze and cough.

you need to look here http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=31 and check out some of the details about carb cleaning and adjustment

how about the link ad sync?....... does the carb open as soon as you twist the handle or does it open by the time the indicator points to the "start" position?

water in the fuel?...... does your have the little glass bowl/filter on the side

The little glass filter on the side has bee bypassed and has an inline fuel filter on the line. This was not done by me it was like this when I got it. Would it cause a problem?

should not cause a problem filter wise. The high speed at one setting out is opened a lot. I usually find them to run best at about 1/2 to 5/8 of a turn. It does sound though as if the carb might still have a spec of something in it.

i would also get a water/fuel separator........ then you can do away with the in-line filter.. or leave it as a back-up, but it wont really need it.

did you clean every orifice manually?...... i overlooked one in my '64 johnson 18hp the first time i rebuilt it.

you could also have an air leak around the carb to intake gasket.
