1961 5hp seaking impeller replacement?

I have a 1961 seaking [GALE] 5hp Ser#16x82270 Mod#GG18736B -
red & white colors. Motor Actually has anly about 50 to 60 hours on it. Just replaced Coils, Points, Condensers. Runs good, but OVERHEATING. No surprise How do I replace the impeller, do I need any special tools? I have seen some info on the internet that I have to remove the powerhead, Can an old fart like me do it? I am semi-mechanically inclined.This has probably been asked 1000 times before.

if no saltwater corrosion is applicable its a very simple task.
some of theparts may or may not be avalible but can be found.
check with a long time jonny rude dealer as most the old 2cyl tiny mites used a total paper gasket that wont withstand the first overheat.
the replacement had steel fire rings.
but power head remoaval, barring corrosion, is very simple on that engine.

Thanks Rodbolt & Tashasdaddy, I think I will tackle the powerhead removal Monday, After looking at the motor closely I think the powerhead comes off with just 7 bolts. Is there anything I need to disconnect That will surprise me after those 7 bolts are out?

TO Rodbolt, Thanks again - NO CORROSION - This was a Michigan engine, used one season, & put into storage in 1963, till now. It is a real beauty,

I did get the powerhead off, But what next? Nothing looks like an impeller housing.

Now you have to remove the two nuts and lockwasher from the top of the shift rod. That's why you had to take the powerhead off in the first place. Note that the lockwasher goes between the two nuts. Then unbolt and remove the lower unit, and you will see the water pump.

Pay attention to that seal assembly at the top end of the drive shaft. It is extremely important that it be in good condition and properly assembled. Failure to do so will destroy the powerhead. Always install a new 303355 gasket and 303347 o-ring.

Did not have time today to work on motor, will tackle it on Tuesday.
Question.
I saw a posting on the internet that the impeller for the Johnson 5.5hp 1954 to 1964 is ALMOST the same but needs to be reamed out .010 to fit the Seaking. Do you know if this is correct and the best way to bore this out or do I need to take it to a machine shop to bore it out. I have not bought any parts yet as I want to see if I need anything else.

That is a truth that does not apply to this Sea King. This one takes the same impeller as a Johnson or Evinrude 5.5hp. Easy to get, and no modification required.

Thanks again, Got everything apart, and everything inside the tower looks perfect except the impeller which is very soft and of course the vanes are all so bent that when the engine is revved they lose contact with the housing, I think.
AM FINALLY HEADED TO THE JOHNNYRUDE DEALER FOR PARTS.

new impeller - perfect - dealer had to order the o-ring & gasket. Should have it Thursday.
QUESTION:
The gasket between the powerhead & lower unit looks perfect, soft, flexible, no grooves etc. Can I just re-use this gasket & does it go back on with or without a gasket sealer (Permatex)?

If it is that good, it shouldn't need any sealer.

UH! OH! - new problem.
found water in lower unit - not a big surprise.
Can a dummy like me replace the seals - prop seal - drive shaft seal - ????
Do I need any special tools? any special tricks or is it pretty straightforward.
I am definitely learning a lot with your help. Fun too.

Just tank tested after new impeller installed, Pumps water very well but still overheating. cover on the side of the cylinders is tan color instead of white and if I sprinkle water on it, it turns to STEAM instantly. Clogged passages??
Where should I look first and just what should I actually be looking for? "I know just enough to get myself into trouble!"
What are my chances on the carb & fuel pump still being ok after all these years. I think carb repair kits are available, but cannot seem to find any fuel pump kits.

The exhaust cover plate on the side is not water cooled and gets blazingly hot!! Absolutely normal. There is fire on the other side of that plate. The paint burned on those plates during the first five minutes on a new motor.

The fuel pump parts were declared obsolete 40 years ago. You are supposed to install a new pump. But some of us have figured out a way to fix the old one. Heh-heh. We modify the diaphragm from a new pump kit.

Question -- A friend gave me a one year old SIERRA FUEL PUMP #18-7350
Replaces OMC #397839. It is supposed to fit 1992 & older 6/8/9.9/15hp. my Seaking does not fall into that niche.

I know my fuel pump is twice as big & all metal, but do you think this pump could be adapted or would I be better off finding a large diaphragm and trying to fit it to the old pump?

Also 3 posts back - any tips if I have to replace seals in the gearcase in the lower unit?

The 18-7350 should work fine as long as nothing is in the way of the outlet nipple, and I doubt there is. The inlet nipple can be rotated any of four positions. The pump must be installed right side up (its marked).

Lots of people reseal their own gearcases. The old seals are tough to get out. The shift rod seal among them, unless you have the tool.

It is all back together. I ran a foul concoction of SEAFOAM, CD-2 LEAD SUBSTITUTE, SYNTHETIC QUICKSILVER OIL, and STA-BIL BLUE MARINE,
and oh yes, a gallon of what Florida legislators call gas---10% ehthanol
(or CRAPOHOL). I ran more than a gallon at all speeds in my trashcan/testtank. The motor performs beyond all expectations. It runs great. & this is with the ORIGINAL CARB & ORIGINAL FUEL PUMP. Is it possible to run that good with 48 year old parts.

I am going to the Mt.Dora / Tavares antique boat show tomorrow in Florida, I'll bet some I-boat people will be there.

I've been reading the posts in here as I have purchased an old 1961 5.5 HP Johnson engine. While it was "claimed" that a new water and fuel pump have been installed its always good to have information should a repair/rebuild be necessary. Thanks for your questions oldman and your corresponding answers, FR. Your expertise has helped this "newbie" as well.
