Re: 1961 5hp seaking impeller replacement?

To F R ,
I had a great day at Mt. Dora/tavares boat show. I wish I could have gone Saturday to say HI! But as it turned out, as I wandered wistfully through all the older & better boats & motors, my eye caught an old 5hp GALE,
Model#30228, Ser # 866472, In rough shape. Guy told me it runs, but needs an impeller. (I wonder if I might be able to replace that)? Of course I bought it. Got it home - put it in tank & 4 pulls later "it runs". Cost me a whole $50.00. The lower mounting bracket seems broken, but I hope to be able to find the parts on the internet. I also am leaking water somewhere on the cylinder head. I probably won't be able to play with this one until late next week, but the masterplan is dual engines mounted on an old - old -16ft
aluminum walleye trolling boat, for the Detroit River, that I use each year in May & june when I head north to visit my brother.
Looks like I'll be asking you some more questions soon,
Gary
PS
The boat show had a lot of class B utilities & merc 20H motors- my first love.

Anything FR tells you - Take it to the bank - He gave me the advice I needed, and more importantly the confidence that I could do it myself.

Oldman, it sounds like you're hooked now. Next year at this time you'll have 15 engines or so! I started that way 5 or 6 years ago and now have 50 engines or so!

Re: 1961 5hp seaking impeller replacement?

Changed the lower unit oil on a 1961 5.5 HP Johnson because of milky mixture when checked AFTER purchase. There were no gaskets on the fill/drain plugs so picked up nylon seals, refilled and plugged. My question is: how difficult is it to replace the other oil seals if needed on this engine? Does anyone have a manual that can show and "tell" how to do this. Much appreciated as I'm still in search of an OMC manual. Thanks

HI F R,
hope you enjoyed the boat show.
NEED YOUR HELP AGAIN, or anybody that can answer this one.
Will the swivel tube from an evinrude 5.5hp model 5514 fit my 1963 Gale 5hp model # 5D22B?? It's about 12 inches long and tapers from 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 inches in diameter. The tube is broken and was brazed but that broke too, on the motor I picked up at the show. I found a listing on ebay for the Evinrude part. I also need the tiny key that turns the impeller on that motor. Can't seem to find one, don't want to try to fabricate one without many tools, but will if I have to.
Thanks,
Gary

to DonCC,
I just picked up a cheap CD on Ebay for 1.5hp to 40hp johnnyrudes for the 1950's & 1960's. IT cost me $0.99 & $3.00 shipping. it has to be better than nothing. Seller says it has complete info on repair & rebuild.

Impeller key is 306196. Here is the swivel for your Gale. I don't have the '57 Evinrude parts list to verify the interchange.

To F R,

You have created a monster - I have redone 3 Motors all 5hp. with your help
1961 Seaking and two 1963 Gales. The problem is, I just bought a late
1960's Johnson 20hp that needs a lot of help. I had such a blast on the little motors I thought I'd try something a little bigger. I think I mentioned
before that I was not "too bright".

Have a good one,

Gary

It's an easy engine to work on... You don't have to remove the power head to drop the lower unit :) I like that a lot better :)
