Hi all,
I recently acquired a 16' Wooden Thompson Runabout. It has a 1961 75hp Evinrude Starflite III V4 Model # 50927, Serial # 05536. The top speed I've seen in this boat is around 28 MPH. I have a feeling that this boat should be able to do closer to 35-40. So my question is should my boat go faster? And where do I begin to look for power problems? It has new points, condenser, and spark plugs. I'm not sure of the specifications on the prop that is on the engine.
Any help would be appreciated.
-Bryan.

well, a wooden boat is heavier then normal, and that old 75hp is really only putting out 60-65 at the prop... so I doubt you'll get much more out of it then 28mph... wich isn't that slow anyway...

If you have all the new electrical stuff, and its firing on all cylinders, and it reaches 5k-5500rpm at WOT (if it does your prop is fine), then you are going as fast as that motor on that boat can get you.

enjoy it.. its better then oars :)

rgds

Frank

Forgive me for being a novice...but there isn't a tach on the engine. So for me to find out how many revs I'm turning I'd need to buy one. Any advice on getting one that will work with this engine? I've looked for one but there seem to be a lot to choose from. Manufacturer, type, part number would be greatly appreciated.
-Bryan

Well a standard teleflex guage should work.. they have a switch on the back to enable them to work on multiple configurations..
start looking here:
http://www.tflx.com/evinrude.html
I have spoken to the tech guys at teleflex several times and they are always prompt and helpful.. so use the email link on their site and ask them if you are not sure. if your engine has an alternator, then you should be fine, ifs its a generator, then I am not sure. Also, look around on that teleflex site, there is a whole second of pdf files for tech issues, like fitting tachs, water temp/pressure and other useful stuff, you will probably find the info in there. ( http://www.tflx.com/tech.html )

Is there a grey wire in your control box?
if so, thats the tach wire.. my old Johnson has one

if worst comes to worst, there are mechanical tachos and there is laser tachos.. which are not dependent on the type of engine, they count the actual physical revolutions of the motor.. so engine type is not important.. if you can't find a normal marine tach that fits, you should talk to a dealer who may have some suggestions.

rgds

Frank
