well, my next shop project is getting a 1961 Mercury 6hp Comet running after a 20 year neglect. I fogged the cylinders to help lube the rings, and let sit for a couple weeks. I cranked it over yesterday, and ...no spark. I pulled the flywheel to find that the points and condensers are MIA! somebody has mounted a couple of little quarter size black boxes, with wires running to the coils and also to a small mounted bar. (right about now, I'm realizing I should have taken a picture). hmmm, is this some sort of updated ignition system? am I better off changing it back to contact points? wouldn't that be the simplest?
