Re: 1961 Glasspar Citation Project

I'm floored- Or at least my boat is.

I got the floor cut & installed today... It is 5/8" ABX ply, a little nicer than the 'stuff' that I used in the transom. The biggest difference is that it had more plys, and was a bit stiffer. Also, fewer voids.

I cut the plywood to shape, then epoxied the bottom well... While that was setting, I epoxied the frames into the stringers. Then, I crammed as much floataion foam in there as I could-

That is about 3/4 of a 4 x 8 sheet of 2" foam. I could PROBABLY have crammed a bit more in there, but not too much. I'll have to put some in other areas.

I mixed up a good batch of epoxy, with filler... I put it in a big ziplock back, and cut a corner off- I used it like a pastry bag, and put a good thick (probably about 3/8") bead of epoxy onto the tops of the stringers and frames. Then, I laid the floor into it- Then screwed it to the frames and stringers. Sorry, no photos of this process- Cameras and epoxy covered gloves don't mix so well. But- here is the result-

This is the opening that I cut to give me access to the bilge-

It is starting to take shape!

Next, I need to put an epoxy fillet around the edge of the panel, then lay a layer of fiberglass over the entire floor, and tape the edges. It's a good thing that I have a new shipment of Epoxy from U.S. Composites coming in the morning!

Re: 1961 Glasspar Citation Project

Despite having to take a bit of time to get my new project boat delivered and put away in the basement, I got the floor of the Glasspar glassed in today-

It was a bit colder than it was supposed to be today- never made it above 50- so I had to keep the garage shut and the heaters going. It's a toasty 65 in there that way.

I've still got to do some sanding, then another layer of epoxy in a few areas, and I have to use some tape to finish off the bilge openings. But- this is the last MAJOR glass project on the boat, all thats left now is filling and fairing... LOTS and LOTS of filling and fairing... Boy, that's going to be FUN!

Thanks.

Unfortunately, I've got to pack her up this week and head back to work... I'll be at sea for the next couple of weeks... BUT- I have a few months off this winter (A few more than I had expected:eek:), so I'll have PLENTY of time to get the rest of the work done!

sorry to hear you'll have a few weeks off Andrew.....

well I assume you've been doing the sporadic work for awhile so Im sure you're accustomed to it....... either way it is scary not having income for weeks........the bills keep coming ...but the cash don't etc etc

Hopefully youll be able to keep your work area warm enough to get some more done when you get back.......

Thanks, Vegas...

I've been fortunate in that I've worked about 8 years without an unwanted 'break', which is somewhat unusual for my industry. But, Having a little extra time off isn't too bad- Especially this time of the year. Keep in mind I work on the Great Lakes, and its COLD up there- REALLY cold- We're not talking "ooh, I wish I would have worn a thicker jacket" cold, either-

We're talking -10 with a nice, stiff breeze. Shifting sheets of ice that grab you and won't let go- Until these guys show up to break you out-

Plus, We are about the only ones out there running all winter, most of the other ships lay up for the worst of it... It gets really lonely out there about the middle of February...

I'm heading north to Traverse City, Michigan tomorrow morning, to meet the ship- Lots of snow there. I can hardly wait :)

andgott,
I use to live and work in MI. I know the cold you are talking about. You were kind with the 10F. I have seen it at the -26 before.
Great pic's too. Keep it warm man and hurry back. You got a boat to finish. :D

Oh yeah- I've seen MUCH worse, too- Lake Superior in Dec/Jan at -30 or so (Don't know for sure because the thermometer was pegged out!), But the 10 below is a 'normal' working temp up there, not all that extreme... Especially when you work the coldest part of the day, the dark hours before sunrise. Brrr...

I've always been a fan of Global Warming :D

Re: 1961 Glasspar Citation Project

Despite being on my ship and away from my project, I've still been taking care of loose ends!

I found a donor boat that's in SLIGHTLY worse condition than mine. It's either a 1960 or 1961- They were identical those years. I bought it for parts- I am going to be able to get the last few pieces of original hardware that mine is missing from it...

Isn't it amazing what you can get done on the Internet?? :)

Re: 1961 Glasspar Citation Project

andgott,
Hey great find.
The internet is so common and useful today how did we ever get along without it. Just like this forum, The information passed each day would take lifetimes to get.
Sorry,
Hope your trip passes quickly.

Thanks.

We're at the shipyard now, so the end is in sight... A few more days and she'll be laid up, and handed over. Then, I've got a few MONTHS off. Time to get the boat done!
