First I have to say the "Search" button is my best friend,But here is my problem at the moment more may be on the way, I finaly got it to run (so so) but no water coming out of the pee hole first I thought water pump (Ohh great, Me being a frist time boat owner and all)then by using the fantastic Search button I found out it has a thermostat, so I pulled that apart, leaving only the white plastic part with the spring atached and started it back up w\o the thermostat and held my hand over the holes... still no water coming out of the pee hole, I thought taking the thermostat out would let the water flow throughout the motor, the water was flowing good out of the thermostat hole and even got warm, at this point I have no more ideas how about you?The model number is RDSL-23

Hiya & welcome,

From your description, I can't really tell where the water is running out / exiting when you have it running (or if any is at all).

Others will be along that know a lot more than me, but... there isn't really a "pee hole", tell-tale, water-flow indicator or whatever you wanna call it on those years of OMC motors. (nor on my 1970). Exhaust water mixture should come out of the relief hole that is on the back of leg about 1/2 way down. At higher speeds most exhaust is sucked out of the lower opening (behind the prop). You know your water pump is working if at idle, water sputters out of the hole 1/2 down the leg... should be lots of water coming out when running faster.

Are you running it on a hose, or in a barrel? If in a tank/barrel, make sure the depth of the water is about the same as it would be when sitting on the boat. Otherwise the water pump has to suck water from down low. That's what it normally does when the boat's on plane, but at idle the pump might not do that well. I prefer using a barrel/garbage can, 'cause you can tell what the pump's doing without having the water pressure from the hose.

If the motor is new-to-you, you'd be wise to service the water pump anyway. Who knows when it was last done. I've changed impellers in ones that I thought were working OK, and found the new impeller pumped WAY more water. It's a wear item, and way easier/cheaper than doing a motor rebuild from a bad overheat!

anyway, that's my $.02

Brent

Did you try running with the thermstat cover left off, If so, was there a good flow of water? On these engines of this age, I have had the problem of the water getting in, but not getting out. Can you tell us a little more what is happening?

Re: 1961 Johnson 40 horse thermostat

Thank you for replying, with the cover off and engine running the water would shoot out of the top of the thermostat housing but when I pushed my hand over the two holes (w\ no thermostat in)no water would come out of the "pee hole" but when I screewed the cover back on the water would flow, weather the flow was good or not I have no idea, but I did buy a new thermostat and impeller today will install them over the weekend, Ok, now when I was at the Certified Johnson Dealer\Shop buying the impreller I asked if that came with the houseing for the impeller he said no, now if I recall correctly, while doing my previous Search, someone said to replace the housing the impeller sits in along with the impeller, any help with that one?

Yes! Install the complete pump kit. Then if the engine over-heats, even with good flow out the thermostat cover to verify the pump is working. Remove the back exhaust housing cover. At the top of the exhaust housing you will see a soft plug about the size of a quarter. Remove the soft plug to see if the discharge holes are plugged. You may also want to check the exhaust cover gaskets.

On my 1960 40 hp I get just a heavy mist out of the exhaust hole, there is no pee hole. The main discharge is below the water line. Hope this helps.

Scott
