Well, this lifetime Johnnyrude owner has gone and bought a Mercury! I know nothing about Mercs but couldn't pass up this deal. It is on a 1961 Starcraft Arrow, and it is in awesome condition. I posted a few pics, but there are more posted in the Boat Forum.

Anyway, the seller said:
1. In the lower unit, you use grease, not gear oil. Is that correct?
Looks like a standard drain/fill plug at the bottom of the L/U. At the top, I see a "flush" plug about the size of the vent/overflow plug on a Johnnyrude, and a smaller screw next to it, and a little lower. Which is the vent/overflow for the gearcase?
2. Run 32:1 gas:eek:il ratio. Is that correct?

I have't been able to figure out how to remove the cowl. I see a thubscrew type bolt at the bottom of the front cowl cover. Almost looks like a carb adjustment knob, so I haven't monkeyed with it. Does that come out to remove the cowl?

Also, there is a knob on the top front of the cowl, on the starboard side which pulls straight up. Is that the manual choke?

Needless to say, I'm getting a service manual, but just wanted to get some ideas.

I think the carb may need cleaning/adjusting as the motor started right up and ran great for a few minutes. Then it started bogging down. By returning to a slow troll and then going to WOT, it resumed good speed and didn't seem to bog down again during the test run. At WOT, the tach was reading 5000rpm. Is that about right?

Thanks for any help!

Re: 1961 Mercury 45hp Questions

If the lower unit seals a in good shape you can run 90# hypoid in the unit or as it says 105 grease. the small 10-24 screw is the vent. As far as oil mix the engine was designed to run on 24 to 1 but today may are running them at 50 to 1 because they say the oil has improve which is the truth but nothing that I know will change the metallurgic of the crank and rods ot modern specs.

On my 1977 500 the cowl is a 3 piece affair the front knob is a 1 / 4 turn then pull the front panel off,the you see two toggle clamps let them over and remove the side band, last the cast top comes off by releasing the vertical toggle clamp and lifting up.Hope that helps.Mike

So I got some Lubriplate 105 Assembly Grease. Is that the proper grease for my Merc400 lower unit?
