After months of thinking & a number of hulls that I was afraid to tackle; I have finally picked up a 17 foot 1962 Glastron as my virgin restore. I have many other non-boat projects going on at the same time, plus this being my first, many of you may become impatient with the progress & I apologize in advance..

Also being in NY, the weather will be a factor. My plan is to clear the shell this year & then rebuild next year, finishing the exterior & color toward the end of next year.

To tease everyone & allow for input, I am posting a few shots I took when I went to see her today & I will bring her home in a couple days when I register the trailer.

Also if anyone wants to tell me this is not a Glastron, thats fine too. The reg paper says GLAST so thats my best guess. I cant find a manufacturer's plate yet.

Neat project. Doesn't look like a Glastron to me but who knows. Welcome to the madness!

Like I said, I am assuming based on the registration saying GLAST.

If anyone has a different thought, I am open. I can't find a photo of a 62 Glastron that looks like it, so I am still searching.. when I get it home Wednesday, I will search the hull for a tag.

Lil_Stinker,
Welcome to Iboats,
I don't think it's a Glastron either. I have notice that boat builders tend to start a certain paint scheme and carry it year to year with only slight changes. That segmented stripe on the side getting smaller as it moves forward, looks just like my 1988 Glasstream. I'm not even sure Glasstream made boats in 62. It sure does resemble it.
Hope this Helps.

Thanks BobsGlasstream, I don't even think Glasstream existed in the 60s, let along made boats..

I went to the motor bureau today & registered the trailer & boat, so Wednesday I pick them up & I will search the hull for any hints, but the new reg still says GLAST, although the trailer now says "homemade"

Lil_Stinker,
I wasn't saying it was a Glasstream either. The paint scheme just reminded me of the one on mine. I don't think they were around until somewhere in the early to mid 80's.
Glastron on the otherhand started in 1956. So much for history.
Glad you got her registered, and now have fun with her.
Good Luck.

Bob,

Thanks for making me look past the current paint job.. I am thinking it is a V-163 Bayflite with some mods (paint for sure), but also te rear end may have had some changes..

I looked at pics of later (60's) Bayflites & with this & your help I am satisfied..

Going to re-do the trailer lights today, no truck so pick her up tomorrow

I change my mind for the last time, 1962 Crestflite V-172, or Sportsman V-171

Here is a general idea of my target finished project. The colors may change to protect my retina..

This is a 61 seaflite, much like the advert above..

Do you recognize anyone?

She is in my yard.. let the fun begin...

Old seats are out, a better inspection of the transom reveals more work ahead than originally anticipated.

Well, I think I upset a few thousand carpenter ants, as well as the spiders that were keeping them in check.

Today I pulled most of the floor some of the stringers & the "Bean Bags"

I took a shower or two, & still feel like I have ants still crawling all over me...

Photos for those who like to see progress...

That's a lot of interior glass. That'll be fun. I don'r see that much on the smaller stuff I drag home. Should be pretty when she's done.

I hope you are using a respirator and googles. That stuff will KILL you. A tyvek suit from Lowe's is HIGHLY recommended as well.

I'm just sayin...:D

Lil_Stinker,
That looks like you are getting serious now. I would highly recommend the tyvek suit, goggles, and respirator. You will be seeing snow flying in August. :D
Take care

Off to Tyvek to get Home Depot, check !
Clearing the garage to bring her in.. Setting a fan & filter system to clear the air..

A box fan & furnace filters should do?

Re: 1962 17' Glastron - My first restore.

A little bit of progress...

Cut off the old-school bumper jack that had been welded on & replaced with a real one. Looks so shiny compared to the rest of the trailer.. Also R&R the old lights, the new ones work !!

Photo0588.jpg

Also spent some time today scooping, sweeping & scooping the old decayed wood, dirt, Styrofoam & fiberglass. She looks so much better & no "real" work was actually done. The fenders are up about 4 inches from the tires now.. I must have removed 4-500 pounds of soggy blech since I brought her home.

cid__Photo0585.jpg

A little dark "wet spot" from the water that was in there, she has been nose-down for a while & had a lot of standing water.

Photo0586.jpg

The transom is very soft, little chance of pulling it out to use as a template, I will need to create an approximate template from the outer hull lines & then finalize it once the old one is removed.

Photo0587.jpg

Thats about it without breaking out the power-tools.. next cutting & grinding the old stringers out.. Is was amazing how the old stringers were separated by the rings of the wood, almost like de-lamination, but on dimensional lumber...
