1962 28hp Head Gasket

I finally got a new (to me) cylinder head for my RX-10 after dealing with a thread insert that came out with the plug due to stripped threads. I got the replacement head used on eBay that came off a 33hp Evinrude of the same vintage.<br /><br />I tried re-using the existing gasket but it didn't seal properly (squirted water out the top). I did try to locate a new gasket without success since the part number in by parts manual doesn't bring any Google hits.<br /><br />Does anyony know the correct Sierra part number for this head gasket? Also, is it OK to use the head from a 33hp motor? They look identical and it bolted right up just fine.<br /><br />Thanks for any help you folks can provide. John

I hate to say it, but the 33hp head will not work. The combustion sealing surface is much further out than on the 28hp, so it doesn't adequately support the copper fire ring on the head gasket. Not to mention it leaves some real nasty crevices for carbon to fill.<br />Just to make sure, there should be no "same vintage" 33hp as 28s since the 33 replaced the 28 in '65. The 33hp head has a bunch of screws holding three water jacket covers on while the 28hp heads have none since they're a single piece head.<br /><br />I *belive* you can use Sierra 18-3865. I think this is the head gasket on my 28hp. It's a little narrower in some of the outer water jacket areas, but it works fine. This is listed as for 25hp Gales, which are 35.7 CID engines. <br /><br />I have the correct OEM P/N for the 28hp gasket somewhere here, but I can't seem to find it. It is no longer available from BRP but it turns up on ebay from time to time, and many dealers still have one. vintageoutboards.com lists one, but for $50. As soon as I find that part number, I'll post it back here.<br /><br />Would high temperature loctite red work to fix the insert? All my 28hp heads have inserts in both plug holes, since these strip so frequently. The inserts are much stronger than the original aluminium. Or is it that the thread insert is stripped to?

Thanks for the response, Paul. I looked at so many heads on ebay that I now think that the one I bought is actually from a 28hp Evinrude. The heads are identical in every way (except the new one is blue) other than an additional screw hole on the new on that looks like it was there for a wire routing clamp.<br /><br />I've still got the old gaskets and head so I can closely compare the new gasket I get. About the old insert, everytime I removed the top plug, the insert came out with it. I had to use pliers (with a scrap of leather around the outside of the insert) to remove it from the plug. Thinking that the old insert was probably no good anymore, I looked at new insert kits but was able to get the head for cheaper($8, I think).<br /><br />I checked the local OMC dealers for the right gasket and as soon as I said "1962" most said they didn't have any stock for motors that old. On Monday, I'll call the iBoats 800 number and see if Sierra 18-3865 can be used. <br /><br />Thanks a lot for the help. I really would like to get this old motor running well again. I've had her on my 1957 Cadillac for five years now and she's never let me down. John

Check with SeaWay Marine and TwinCity Outboard Toyman. Both have sites and I've gotten several old parts and gaskets from both. SeaWay seems to have a good stock of older gaskets.<br /><br />Most NAPA stores carry Sierra parts and can also get them for you.

I've got 308674, which lists as still available for around $25. I've got to double check it with the BRP website to make sure there's nothing fishy going on, but that number comes right off a 28hp gasket.<br /><br />The 33hp head is very different from the 28hp head, so I think you must have a 28hp. There's no confusing the two. The Sierra one is a replacement for 302583, so there might be some differences.
