I just want to make sure the waterpump is working on this 1962 5.5 I picked up at a yard sale the other day.
I mounted it on a sawhorse with a 5 gal bucket of water around the foot. The motor fired up and ran good but so much was going on in the bucket I could tell if it was pumping water. I would have used my flushing muffs but the were loaned out. I am going to retry it with the muffs Tuesday. Is there a P hole or somewhere I sould see the water come out. I know I should probably just put a new impeller in just to be safe but I don't have time this week and my nephew wants to use it this weekend. Thanks, Chris

You're right. Put a new impeller in it.

You should see some water spray coming out of the exhaust relief half way up the midsection.

Muffs don't fit that outboard so don't bother trying.

5 gal seems a little small. The water pump, which resides on top of the lower unit, needs to be submerged on that engine for it to prime. So you have to have the water level up over the seam between the midsection and the lower unit.

Lots of good 5.5hp service info here:

I run mine in a 5 gallon bucket for flushing out the salt. Works OK . And as stated, you should have water coming out the back leg spout halfway up. And Paul, do you feel like breaking the news to him about the powerhead coming off to get the leg off to get at the pump, or should I do it? 8)

:) I was hoping he'd find that out over on Tom's site. Still, it doesn't have anything on a Mercury Dockbuster!

Ahh yes, the good looking Merc's of old. Should have made them direct drive aircooled (Motor covers make good boat anchors though!) Just sold a good PSI, good spark Mark 10 to a Merc freak, telling him I knew nothing about the motor (came with some others), but just about gar-in-teed it needed a impeller. He had the tools, AND the patience I guess. One of these day if I find a junk lower, I will have to go in there and look for myself just whats involved (never done a spring shifter drive thingy or whatever its called), and see what all the hullabaloo is about. Also will probably add one more Engineer to my list! Be well..
