1962 75hp Evinrude questions

Is there a reasonable way to convert the cable and pully steering on a '62 75hp rude v4 to a more modern style single cable type arrangement?<br />I might pick up this f/g over plywood boat and alter it to a walkaround center console. The other question...The mechanix of the motor appear sound but it's been 20 years since it has been run, are there enough parts around to make this a fairly reliable motor? I am having trouble deciding whether to take this project on or not...your help will be appreciated...just a ?

Thought,<br /><br />Yes, you can change it to a (push/pull) system-sort of.<br /><br />You will need a transom clamp bracket for the cable. You can find the necessary hardware at:<br /><br /> www.westmarine.com <br /><br />Look under the steering section, you'll get the idea.<br /><br />The engine is a different story. Can you resurrect it, why not? I just did one that had been sitting since 1986-outside, a 1983 model.<br /><br />Granted, I started with a 20 year newer engine.<br /><br />You'll need to do the following as a minimum, before you even think about starting it.<br /><br />1. Rebuild carbs.<br /><br />2. Rebuild fuel pump.<br /><br />3. Change lower unit fluid, with new fill/drain plug seals.<br /><br />4. Change the water pump.<br /><br />After that, you'll proabably need to change the thermostats and some electrical parts, such a coils.<br /><br />With all that said, you're probably looking at $250.00 minimum (parts) to get it going and be reasonably reliable.'<br /><br />Is it worth it, probably not. Unless it has some sort of intrinsic or historical value to you, I'd probably pass too.<br /><br />The boat sounds interesting-though.

Some of those old 4s use a distributor and the <br />rotor and cap are scarce and costly.Some have a belt driven mag. others a battery ign. with a belt driven dist.<br /> Otherwise I think parts will be fairly straight forward.It may have Electric shift be sure it<br />works correctly before spending any money.

Thanks for the replies, I agree with JB about a motor not run in 20 years but I will have it at the shop to check it out thouroughly...if I can save the motor djohns19 the push/pull steering will work fine...and it does have a belt driven distributor, with a bracket for a generator(but no generator or reg/rect)) and a manually operated l/u, steelspike...the boat was given to me(tho not here yet) but what I really like is the hull, 15' long, 80" beam, sorta like some of the BW's I've seen...I can either resurrect the hull as a cc, or do a takeoff on the lofting to build a new one...I may be back to ask some more specific questions on the motor, I would like to see it run again, but if not, no worry...thanks, Thought100
