Re: 1962 Evinrude 18 Hp Model 15036M

Hey guys, gonna run the motor in a few minutes. I see I have another issue to fix. The lower "pan" or cover that the carb adjustments and choke lever go thru is loose. I see what I thought was 4 "studs" that keep the pan tight. After further investigation, I see they're rubber assemblies Part# 377582.

Question: How do I replace these rubber mounts? What all do I need to take apart? Am I going to have to remove the powerhead? If so, how difficult is this?

Re: 1962 Evinrude 18 Hp Model 15036M

Ran motor for a while and then let it soak for ~3 hrs. Pulled drain plug and oil looked GREAT :D. I trully think it was the driveshaft seal that was leaking.

As for the loose lower cover/pan, I found that the steering bracked had been welded in the past. So I called my dad and he gave me the scoop. A lot of years ago, the boat was parked under a big willow tree and a branch fell and broke the steering bracket, so he had someone weld it up. Well, they did a good job on the "front" part of the bracket, but they missed two welds back further towards where the engine steering pivots.

On the back part of the steering bracket, starboard side, there's an "arm/lever" that sticks out to the side and has a threaded hole in it. Its located right in front of my shift lever but I don't know what its there for. Well, this part got broken off and they missed welding it back on. On the exact opposite side, the bracked is broken too. The two front rubber mounting assemblies are attached to these broken pieces and that's why the pan is so loose. The front rubber mounting assemblies are actually still good! I do have one mounting assembly in the back that is shot though...prolly due to the vibration caused by the broken steering bracket.

I'm guessing that you'd have to remove the powerhead to get at the broken pieces to weld them. And, I'm sure that whoever welded the front of the steering bracket didn't want to get that deep into the project.

Currently, I put some rubber between the pan and the motor as shim's for now and that really stabalized the pan. I want to get it welded up properly though.

So, what's the procedure for removing the powerhead to expose the steering bracket? If there's a youtube video out there, please include the link (those are VERY helpful!!)
