I have been trying to find information on the wiring of my generator. Need information on schematic for generator to voltage regulator and then into 12v system. Any help is much appreciated. Evinrude 40hp model 35933

Welcome to Iboats, aaero!

First thing - you want to get yourself a service manual. It has that sort of thing. I guarentee it will pay for itself for you.

Iboats has aftermarket manuals that cover your engine (I prefer the Seloc one for that engine), but if you don't want to buy one, check the local library. OEM manuals are technically superior, although they do refer to special tools, and assume you know a little bit about outboards. They are still reprinted. You can get them at the following places:
TheOutboardWizard
Mastertech
Marine Engine
Ken Cook
Check ebay too - you can often find used manuals for a fraction of the price of a reprint. Search for "Johnson Manual" and "Evinrude manual". Your engine is a '62, but a '63 manual will refer to '62 specs.

That said, the wiring is pretty simple. The A(rmature) lead on the generator goes to the "ARM" terminal on the regulator. The F(eild) terminal goes through a 4 amp fuse to the FLD terminal on the regulator. The BAT terminal on the regulator goes back through a 20amp fuse, and then connects to the positive terminal on the battery. The case of the regulator gets grounded back to the fuse box.

If you have replaced the voltage regulator, the regulator must first be polarized.

I hope this helps!

Paul, thank you for the info. You had mentioned polarizig the regulator, did you mean flashing the generator field?

Yup.
Jump the BAT term to the ARM terminal for a second, with everything hooked up.
Good luck!

Re: 1962 evinrude 40hp generator circuit

Thanks again Paul, now I have a new problem, since I do not have an O.E.M. regulator, I went to the auto parts store. I found a regulator with 4 terminals, Ign, Fld, Arm and Stator. Is there a way to wire this into my system? Would I use the ignition lead to the battery and leave the stator lead empty?

That sounds like a regulator for an alternator, and won't work on a generator. Apparently an early to mid 60's Ford 3 terminal regulator works well though - some board members here use one. Those cars employed generators rather than alternators.
Generator theory

Re: 1962 evinrude 40hp generator circuit

Thanks again Paul. I was able to locate an old ford voltage regulator at advance auto parts for $20.00 GP Sorensen part #VR203, it has the proper terminals and is rated at 20-35 amps. With the inline fuse @ 20 amps return to battery and 4 amps to the field. I feel I will be protected from overcurrent. I have included part number for others who may have a similar problem.
One note is that Sorensens reccomendation for flashing the generator field is to connect the battery and armature circuit then temporarily contact the field lead to the battery terminal on the regulator (with field lead NOT connected to the regulator) after flashing the generator, connect the field lead to the regulator. Thanks again for the help and Happy Hooking.
