I've read some posts that say on this model and year you have to pull the powerhead to get to a bolt that when loosened, allows the lower unit to drop far enough to get to a second bolt that when loosened allows the lower unit to drop completely. From what I understand, this should allow me to change the impellar.
I've got the seven bolts out that attach the powerhead to the base. My problem is that the powerhead won't separate from the base. I don't know if it is because of age that the gasket has kind of bonded somewhat to the metal or what. I've tapped the powerhead with a rubber mallet, but that hasn't moved anything either. Any help would be kindly appreciated.

I belive it should be just seven bolts and the powerhead comes off. It's possible that the driveshaft is frozen to the crankshaft making it difficult to remove the powerhead. You can check this by removing the bolts that hold the lower unit on and seeing if it drops a little. Even with the shift-shaft connected, it should come down a 1/4" or so.
When removing the powerhead, a few wallops from a rubber mallet are usually required due to the gasket sticking. But by the sounds of it, you've tried that.

Check out Tom Travis' site on his 5.5hp for some details: Click here.

Paul, thank you so much for the quick reply. Although I whacked it, apparently I didn't whack it hard enough. Second time around was a charm. Special thanks for that great website. It is jam- packed with useful information, especially for a novice like me.
