Ive seen a lot of info on winterizing outboards. I just got the motor up and running smooth and I'd like to know what's the best way to put her to sleep for the winter.
Thanks in advance.

Run gas out of the carburetor.------Make sure cavity drains in lower unit are clear and not filled with sand / silt.------Store upright for winter.

You will get different opinions. While running in a barrel or on the water I unhook the gas line at the tank and just before it runs out of fuel I spray some fogging oil in the carb. I then remove the spark plugs and spray the same fogging oil into the plug holes. And then turn the the motor over a few times. Then I drain and refill the gear oil in the gear case. On some of my motors there are drains on the carbs and I remove them and tip the motor up. This might not apply to your motor. If you have some fuel left in the tank add something like Stabil to keep the fuel for next season. I have left my motors outside and also in a heated basement and I have have had no issues yet. If you live in a cold climate then it is very important that you do not have any water in the gear case. As it could freeze and crack the gear case.

He just got the motor running so I assumed it had fresh oil already.

Add the Stabil to the tank before doing the fogging operation. Then run it long enough to get the Stabil mix all through the system. Then fog and do the rest of the stuff. Finally, after taking it out of the water, give the starter a couple of pulls and store upright.

Can we assume it is not a salt water use motor?
