Hi to all, my 1962 28 hp evinrude elec shift has gas pooring out of the bottom of the carb, I did not prime it, I just connected the hose and a few minutes later I smelled gas, I removed the cover, checked and I could see gas flowing out the carb, do I need to service the carb?

It sounds like you have a stuck needle valve in the carb. Yes, it's time to overhaul the carb.

Get a carb kit with a new float. Float is most likely original and may not be "floating" anymore.

Hi Daviet, my model number I have is; 28252C and the link you sent has 28202 & 03 they look the same as mine motor, but is there a model 52C out there?

The '5' only means yours is a long shaft version of the 28202..., as in 5-inches longer. Or, at least it was when it came off the assembly line. The 'C' means it has had a change made from the initial run that year. Most likely a very minor change and nothing that should affect your choice of carb kit...

Also, the 28hp was NOT electric shift. BIG difference...

Now looking at mine, I can't see the extention that makes it into a long shaft, did they assemble it as one shaft unit on the line or did someone remove the extention and now it's a short shaft. the "C" is for adding the elec shift later?

Re: 1962 Evinrude Carb Gas Flow

Hi Folks, I'm back again this year with the same carb issue, the carb diagram Daviet sent is almost the same, I have the carb kit, but the instructions/diagram is for the needles on top and bottom, my carb has the needles side by side, low speed on the left and high on the right. Anyone have a diagram for me, (Daviet) I want to make sure I am doing this correctly.

The high speed needle is actually on the bottom, with a remote knob to the right of the low speed with a rod running down to the actual needle.

Perfect! First; Lindy46 you where right about the float, it was in a really bad condition and replaced the float with a new one! cleaned entire carb and changed all gaskets, overhauling completed. So the adjustment knob on the right controls the bottom high speed correct? I have a diagram informing of adjusting for the needles and need to know, do I adjust/tighten by hand and how do I know how tight is right before I start to adjust?

Make sure the carb bowl chamber vent is clear. The air in the carb must be able to vent out when gas is filling the bowl, or the air over the fuel will pressurize and get pushed out around the high speed jet, up the nozzle and into/out of the carb throat.

Good luck!

If carb bowl vent is clear, float is adjusted correctly and float valve closing, nozzle gasket in place, fuel shouldn't flow out the carb throat. Did you check carb body/bowl for any cracks? Where exactly is the fuel coming out?
