(wasnt sure where to post this....mods move if necessary)

Ok guys. This thread will be for any questions I have or more importantly any comments and suggestions that you all can give me. I am REALLY looking foreward to getting this little guy into like new condition, and also for your insights.

ALL THE PICS ARE THUMNAILS>>>>>CLICK THEM TO SEE A LARGER VERSION ( save loading time as I am sure pics will be a plenty)

Here are a few pictures of the motor at the begining of this adventure. The marine growth on the leg has eaten through the paint and primer in some places leaving the bare metal exposed. The rest of the motor is in typical shape for something that has been in the sun for a lot of years. The finish is faded and very dull.

This pic is of the lower unit after I cleaned as much scum as I could off with a dilluted solution of vineager and water.

These pics are of the lower unit after I sanded all the loose paint and primer off in preparation for new zinc primer. I used a few different wire mesh brushes i had that attach to a drill. I used proper mouth/nose and hand precautions as the old "green primer" is very dangerous. I also have removed the propeller which will also be refurbished and given a new white coat.

Re: 1962 Evinrude Fisherman Restoration (IT'S COMPLETE!!!!)

I have just today begun to restore the fiberglass cowl. There are a few nicks and minor chips here and there, but I didnt feel the need to fix them as I think they add a little "class" and "history". Here are a few pics of the cowl before I began.

The next thing I did was carefully remove all of the old decals. This was a little tricky as I was trying not to break the little fasteners that held them on from the inside of the cowl. After removing the decal pieces I gave the cowl a good sanding and cleaned it off the best I could. It certainly doesnt look pretty at this point.

Here is the cowl after one of MANY coats of primer.
That's looking really good! I found glazing putty, the autobody stuff not the stuff for glazing windows, worked very well for any scratches in the fiberglass. Really saved on the high build primer coats.
Now I'm not restoring any of my own motors, so I took a little time with a file and removed the step at the bottom of the skeg, removed any flashing, and trued the cap to the rest of the lower unit so you couldn't see the cap seam. Also it's a real good idea to have a look at the cavitation plate and make sure it's flat and there's no dents in it. Right now they can be fixed with a little hammer work.

Don't go nuts and try to remove every last trace of paint. The last 10% isn't worth it. :)

PS - how did you do those thumbnails? Do you link them as URLs?

Hey Pony, Lookin' goooooood! This caught my attention as I have just aquired a 1963 Evinrude 18 HP Fastwin, and am anxious to begin the restoration.......I have not yet begun as I am finishing up another motor, but almost done!
I would like to follow your progress, maybe we can compare notes.....? This is great fun....next motor will be my 1955 Johnson Sea Horse 5 1/2!
Good Luck!

Thanks for the putty advise paul. I may try it, as I have only primed it once so far (the cowl anyways), and I still could easily do it.

Has any one tried this guy for decals?? It seems almost too perfect.

cutnupvinyl.com/_wsn/page3.html

The thumbnails are from imageshack. After you upload a pic to whatever size you want, they give you a thumnail url that you can use instead of the standard image ones.

Hey PONY,
I was just wondering, would you happen to know what could be used to replace the rubber seal that attaches to the edge of the cowl? I pulled mine off and it is very hard and brittle.....
have not tried the site on the decals, am going to take a look, I have bought decals from recoil2004 in the past (ebay) see:

http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZrecoil2004

Yellowstone60, I think the seal is the same or similar to the 5.5hp one. Have a look at nymarine.ca.

Re: 1962 Evinrude Fisherman Restoration (IT'S COMPLETE!!!!)

I have been looking at that site paul posted for the past couple of days.....lots of neat stuff there. Fortunately my cowl gasket is in pretty decent shape.

Today I went and bought most of my paints and primers. I still have to find some zinc phosphate stuff. I know its carried here, so maybe ill order some provided the shipping isnt nuts cu of the chemical content.

I was going to buy some other parts but I ran into a road block. The plugs I pulled out are J8C. Is this the correct plug?? The motor isnt listed in Champion's marine plug book...........or I should say I definately couldnt find it. Was wondering if maybe Champion re-labeled this plug under a different part number. I assume the gap is .30 on this thing.

My 1970 plug chart lists the Fisherman with a J6J or J4J plug set at .030.Present number is J6C or J4C.I assume The J6C is hotter for use when trolling a lot.I would stay away from the J8J.

The current Champion chart is wrong. It has J8Cs for all the 50s-60s Johnny/Rudes, which will destroy some of them. Watch out.

The best chart I've seen online is this one:
boatsetup.com/SparkPlugChart.pdf
They seem to keep it up to date, and the last time I compared it was the same as the BRP chart.

Thanks once again Paul.....I took a look at the link and bookmarked it for future reference. Not sure why I didnt think to look at the BRP site..........but was at the very least able to verify I bought the right plugs for my other motor.

I think I will throw some JC4's in there......prolly will be wide open most of the time.

Lookin' good! You're doing just fine.

You did get the part about etching the bare shiny aluminium with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water right? Just load up a windex bottle, spray where you need to and let it sit out of direct sunlight until it dries, then wipe off with a damp rag. Handle with gloves and paint immediately. Your primer will bond better. I often give it one last wipe down with acetone just before painting, but I really don't think it's necessary.

Thanks for the tip on the spray bottle;I was going to use a toothbrush lol. I will definately do that when the time comes. Still am waiting to get my zinc chromate and for the weather to get a little warmer. I just may give it a final wipe down with acetone, I have a bottle of it in the garage somewhere.

Thanks again Paul. With your help this should turn out nice.

Heres an updated pic.
Re: 1962 Evinrude Fisherman Restoration (IT'S COMPLETE!!!!)

Well I did learn something today............Cleaning off grease, oil and gunk to prep for painting goes very quickly with a BIG aeresol can of carb cleaner. I cleaned stuff off that I never thought would come off. It was GREAT.

Update: Plastic Decals are now permanantly mounted to the cowl with locktite instant adhesive and clear silicone on the inside of the cowl covering up the "knobs" that poke through to the other side.
