Please help, I have a 1962 Evinrude 40hp that when in water the gear lube leaks all over. I have taken the lower unit apart and checked for cracks and have found nothing. I have however found where it is leaking from. There is a metal screen on the right hand side of the lower unit the gearlube is leaking out of that. Another thing I dont understand is when I discoverd that it was leaking I checked the lower unit and there was no lube in it all of it leaked out and it was full of water. If any one has any ideas of what the problem is, or know a fix please let me know. THANK YOU.

No I didnt think to check that, I did replace the impeller itself because the old one had seperated but I didnt change anything else on it.

you may as well replace all the seals on the gear-case. Then get it pressure and vaccum tested before you re-attach it to your leg. This will tell straight away if there are any leaks still present.

N.B. Check the shafts (drive shaft and prop) where the seals sit, and make sure that there aren't any deep grooves worn into the shafts from the old seals.
