Any used prop may have a bad slip clutch hub. My service manual says the hub can be checked with a torque wrench and "suitable holding fixture and adapter". The spec says anything less than 150-210ft-lbs. should have the hub renewed. I've never tested one but have experienced a bad hub. It looks like iboats.com has new ones at their online store. Just click on the "Boat Propellers" tab at the top of the page. Good luck with that great old motor!

Re: 1962 Evinrude Lark 40 HP

Thanks, I just purchased a 1961 Lonestar 15' Fiberglass ski boat with the 1962 40 hp Lark. Getting ready to pull the motor and give it a going thru. Just wanted to start the gears turning on finding places to get parts and advice. Looks like I found the right place. Thanks to everyone for your responses. I will post pics very soon.

Re: 1962 Evinrude Lark 40 HP

I have that same engine on my 13ft whaler. I had my prop hub fail on me in the middle of the river last summer, not a good situation when the launch is upstream!

Not to hijakc, but I know the guy I bought the boat from said he used to pull water skiers with it back in the 70'3/80's before he parked it, so I know its capable of doing it. Is it realistic though? I'd like to get a small 1 or 2 man tube to pull, but I want to make sure its not to much strain on the old engine or anything.

I plan on tubing and skiing with it and do not anticipate any issues. I learned to ski behind a boat just like the one I just bought back in the 60's and I was 175 lbs. Pulled my up and out just fine. Not a speed demon but great for kids tubing and all around fun.

Re: 1962 Evinrude Lark 40 HP

I have towed a lot of kids and adults behind J&E33/35/40HP motors from the 50's & 60's. They are not speed demons but have lots of torque. Just find a prop for that application so you do not hurt the motor by lugging it. If you need a service manual to work on your motor, I'll make you the same offer I made bashr52 and other forum members. Send me your email address in a Private Message and I will reply with an attachment that is a free scanned copy of my non-factory manual that covers all 30-40HP outboard motors built by OMC from 1956-64.

I personally like the electric shift models and my 1962 Johnson 75 never had a single problem with the gearcase in ten years. They are great when they work but very pricey to repair. Make sure you use the Type C gear lube or it will not work correctly!

Re: 1962 Evinrude Lark 40 HP

I don't reckon they would be any more problematic as any of the other lower units. It's all in how well they've been maintained:cool:

Re: 1962 Evinrude Lark 40 HP

Well, the weather here in Tulsa has been extremely cold but it finally broke today and if it stays like the weatherman says it will, looks like I will be able to go get the boat and motor next Saturday. Thanks for all your input. As soon as I get her home I will send more pics and get the motor to my Brother in Law for his perusal. Will try an keep everyone posted on progress.

Again thanks to everyone for your responses.
