I have a 1962 Fabuglas 14 ft. ski boat. The problem I have is that the steering has been stipped. I have all of the pulleys, steering wheel and drum. What I need to know is if anyone can help with a diagram of how the cable and pulley system is supposed to be installed. Oh yeah, this all hooks onto a 1963 Evinrude 75 h.p. outboard motor. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Re: 1962 Fabuglas

You just pull the cable through the spool then wind the two cables in opisite directions around the drum, then take the two cables and run one down each side of the boat to the clevis on the motor through the pullys there and back to the sides of the boat to the tension springs, not hard at all, you come off the top of the steering drum or when you turn the wheel to the left you will go right. Easy don't you think? :D

Just reread your post and your boat is a little over powered isn't it? That boat is more than likly rated for around a 50hp motor, better check the transom. By the way welcome to the forum.

The 75 horse is the original motor for the boat. Thanks for your concern.

75hp is fine for that boat...by the way, nice boat. Be sure you use new coated cable made for the purpose, lest you wants to redo the job soon... :)

What's the beam and draft on those boats? My boat is a lake style boat 16'6" with a 6'10" beam with a 3'11" draft and it only rated for a 80hp motor.

Length isn't the determining factor for factory ratings. Buoancy, structural design and weight of boat are the primary factors. The much publicized Coast Guard formula is a failsafe method of bare minimum requirements of dimension to standardize ratings without them having to know the structural differences between boats and for boats with no manufacturer rating plates. It doesn't mean that a smaller boat can't handle more power if it was designed and rated as such from the manufacturer. In simple terms, it is possible to have a smaller boat that has a hp capacity rating higher than a larger boat. Bass boats are a perfect example with different manufacturers have the exact same size boat but one may be rated for only 150hp and the other brand rated for 250hp.

I'm a fool when it comes to boats. This is my first! I don't know anything about beam and draft??? ,but i do know this is the way the boat came.
