Re: 1962 johnson 75 hp lower unit overhaul pictures included

I still need to remove the forward coil and bearing, any clues or tips on how to get those suckers out?

just a slight update, I ordered a used gear case from outboard-parts.com. I would like to say their customer service is actually really good for my experience. I put the order in, called them to give them all the info. Got a call next day (yesterday) letting me know that due to an error on their part they would be shipping me a brand new gear case for the cost of the used one that I ordered. so bonus and thumbs up to outboard-parts customer service pretty sure they just got themselves a really good repeat customer.

Ok as you all can see from the pictures the wiring harness going from the coils to the top of the engine for the electric shift is damaged. Been scouting around for a replacement.

QUESTION: Is a 1962 40hp wiring harness compatible with a 75hp?

Well its been a while since I last updated. Lost power to one barn and in middle of rewiring that. Stopper to HF today picked up a slide hammer/gear puller to try and get forward coil out. After about 30mins of farting around broke out my cutoff wheel / grinder.

Started off with the patch job to see what they did and to see if I could get behind the coil yo tap it out. Now I would tell ya what they used as filler but I have pictures instead. Trust me will be worth it on this one.

Got frustrated so I carefully cut down the sides of the gear case being careful not to hit the coil.

Wedged a flat blade screwdriver and started to pry the two halves apart until I heard the coil drop free. The coil as well as the bearing were corroded in place. Dunno if there is any saving them.

The new gear case is here and need to put it through the parts washer as there is some forming sand left in it. Still waiting on the seals to get here though.

I know I've seen posts before but can't find them off hand on how to test the coils.

Now onto the fun. Can you guess what they used as filler?
what could that be.jpg

so lets see if you all guessed correctly.... here's another hint....

still dunno? well here's the last hint...

yup they used a 1996 dime as filler than put what looks like epoxy over the top of it. I wonder where the water was leaking into the gear case from.....

small update: I just bought a NOS forward coil and am going to install it since I'd rather just rebuild this unit the once. Figure with all the trouble I had getting the old coil out starting with a new one would probable be a better idea.

Decided that since I had too cut the old gear case apart to get the forward coil and roller bearing out figured i'd do an 'exploded' view of sorts. Hope you all enjoy.

EDIT: I started to rebuild the gear case using the new case and started to get frustrated so I did this instead.
