I am working on a 1962 Johnson and am unfamiliar with motors this old. I have done the waterpump impeller and am not certain it is cooling the motor correctly as certain parts are getting hotter than others and there is no indicator. The part that is getting the most hot is what I beleive to be the exhaust cover. This might be normal but I am not sure. The parts gets so hot that you can't touch it for a second or you will burn your finger. I will include a picture of the part described below. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

If you are talking about a 3hp or 5.5hp, it is normal for the exhaust cover to get smoking hot. There is fire on the other side of that cover plate.

This is a 28hp. The plate getting really hot is to the right of the cylinder head. Looks like a fuel pump is attached to it.

Absolutely not normal. Do you have it on a boat or is it in a bucket? Is it deep enough in the water? Water pump needs to be submerged before starting the motor.. If that isn't the problem, time to recheck your water pump job. Of course it is possible it is plugged up somewhere, but that would be unusual for that motor. There IS an indicator for visual checking for pumping. It should be blowing a heavy spray out the exhaust relief about half way down the backside.

Problem solved, I blew high pressure air through the water tube and cleared some crud out of there. Now runs nice and cool.
