Re: 1962 Johnson RDS-24M no fire upper cylinder

Boat manufacturer literature says the boat is for 20" shaft motors. I have not actually measured the height of the transom. Just assumed the literature is right. Best I can tell the motor runs about 18" from the vent plate to the mounting bracket. Will try to get the measurement on the transom. Boat is 10 hours from me right now. Boat is a 1961 Crestliner 17' day cruiser. I do have my vent plate about 1" up on my 1974 stern drive setup. It seems to work pretty good. Was not sure if the older style water pickup would work at speed with the vent plate above the transom.

18" is about the right length for a motor of that era. Most transoms are 15" in which case you may actually need to raise the motor a few inches, but if it is a 20" transom then you may indeed need a long shaft motor. The water pickup will still work at speed because water is forced into the screened intake in front of the prop at speed as long as the vent plate is just at/breaking the water's surface.

Transom measures 21". Looks like I need an extension. Found all the parts on eBay except the drive shaft.

yeah, if you have a 21" transom you'll need a longshaft. Keep us posted on the conversion.

jmo, but if your not trying to win a best at show ribbon, why not save some big$$ and possible big headaches, and just do a clean job , and cut the transom down?

Yeah, if I am going to restore this boat then I am going for a best in show !! Turns out the conversion to long shaft has not turned out out to be too bad. Thanks for the help. Thank goodness for eBay parts store.
