:eek:well i just fixed my rope starter and well saw some dried up goo that dripped long time ago from the flywheel is that the coils cause looks like they need replacing anyways i was looking where to change the gear oil i found one screw( i thinks its the top) yet i cant find the other screw help? and when i fixed my rope started its really!! hard to pulll is this normal or is it that i havent ran in like 10 years so like no oil in crankcase pistons etc. the flywheel has a belt attacked to it and its attacked to something else what is that thing kinda long as the block it self and theres a rubber tube covered in string( guess to protect the tube) and its on the left side right below the fuel pump what its that? i acidently broke that the rubber was all dried up and the fuel lines how hard is it to replace them all of them from fuel pump to carbs and from fuel pump to connector to fuel line from fuel tank? where can i get those

The rope being hard to pull could be a good sign, or a bad one. Try removing the spark plugs, and squirt a bit of oil into the cylinders. Then see how it works. Compression is good, and makes things hard to pull. Stuck pistons are bad, and makes things hard to pull as well.
The belt hooks up to the distributor.
There is no oil in 2 stroke engines, they are lubricated by the oil mixed into the gas.
There are no coils under the flywheel, but there is a "stator" it has two "yellow" wires running from it to the "regulator".
The "black goo" could be from a leaking top seal, or from someone who sprayed something into the "starter recoil" some time back to help it "pull the starter rope back in freely".

Re: 1962 merc500

well the distribuator i think is in good condtion i should check the spark today and quirt some oil in the chambers yes i know its a 2 stroke i mean since it hasnt been used like its all gone( btw i havent started it in 10 years was my grandfathers so he passed away gave it to me) so would anything be wrong with the engine other than carbs like the thing under the flywheel is that important in running the engine u said the stator and by the way=btw ummm if i buy fuel line that u use for ur gas tank would that work cause i think i need to replace all of them

please reply especially to this question what the tube under the fuel pump on the left side of the engine little left of the fuel pump cause i broke it and what does it do?

oh and one mroe question if i buy a service manuel from the site would a 65- (i forgot year) be good enough or should i buy the huge 420 page book of previuos models

The only "tube" under the fuel pumps that i can "picture" is the one that goes to the bayonet connection, which you plug your external fuel tank into. There is the wireing harness which you connect your controller to.
There is also a tube which runs from the distibutor housing and connects just under the front cowl cover.

The engine will not run, or will not run properly if the stator is broken, however its a simple ohm's test to check if it is ok. If you have a Digital volt meter, you can easily test if it is ok. There should be a ristance reading between the two yellow wires. Make sure one at least is disconnected from the regulator. The reading varies between stators, and I don't know the correct value for yours. There should be infinate resistance between either of the wires, and the engine "block" or ground.
As for the fuel lines, if they are leaking or broken, they need to be replaced, I think you can buy ones for your engine. Otherwise you will need to buy fittings and fuel line hose, and connectors to make up your own.
The 1965 and prior sevice manual can be bought in book forum, or on a CD.
The Cd is avaliable on E-bay. I am not sure which book the site sells.
If the engine has sat for ten years, there is thread listed in the FAQ's (I think its in that section) about how to "wake an old outboard" you should read, before you try anything else to this motor.

idk if u heard this from me already the stator does need replacing cause i told u this black goo was dripping from it long time ago and theres a big hole in it just so u know dont feel like paying 300$$4 to get a new one and something else go wrong btw i told u this before it hasnt ran in 10 years i dont want to screw seomthing else ill probably look into a used 80 or 90' maybe 2000's motor around 30-50 hp i really looked forward into fixing up this motor too just that lots of stuff to work on
