1962 RDS-24M Test Run

Got my classic johnson 40HP outboard motor started today. Seemed to go ok.

here is a picture of it running.


After running i drained my test tank and the lower unit looked like this


Is this ok? Is this just exhaust goop from running in the test tank.

And finally, here is a video of the motor running. If you see anything not right let me know please.

If your fuel/oil mix is 24:1 that is just the exhaust goop. Have you pressure tested the LU? Leaking gear oil from the LU will make the water in test tank will look worse than that usually and is sometimes foamy.

Sounds like it may be sneezing a little. Idle adjustments maybe!

PS on making any video - Most folks just pan and move around way too fast. Slow movements and slower pans make for better viewability. Just my 2?s

That will happen when running in a small test tank. As the water gets recycled it gets worse too. You should see the water in mine after I run some old motors with an 8:1 mix!

Try richening the idle mixture screw a touch.

Also, does not appear to be pumping enough water. You were only on the exhaust port for a second and it was smoky but did not appear to be proper flow. Did you do the water pump on this?

Hard to tell from the video, but it didn't seem to be pumping much water. Did you change the impeller?

+1. The goop is normal and simply a result of the exhaust gasses being pumped into the test tank water and recycled over and over. It will go away on the open water. In addition to changing the impeller, I would try raising the water level a bit in the test tank too to see if that helps it pump water better.

yes. i changed the impeller. wondering about thermostat.

Well, it wouldn't hurt to change it out. The motor is 50+ years old. Or remove it and test it by suspending in a pan of water on the stove. Put a thermometer in the water and begin heating. Thermostat should open at 140-150 degrees F.
