There's a motor for sale in my hometown which I'll probably end up buying this week. Not sure of the value because there doesn't seem to be too much information out there on it. If anyone has ideas of values or any info at all it'd be much appreciated. It's a 1962 Scott Atwater "Royal Scott" with 43.7hp, according to the seller.IMG_1042.JPGIMG_1041.JPGIMG_1040.JPGIMG_1043.JPG

Are you interested in collecting and/or restoring old outboards? If so, it has some value, which only can be determined by what you can work out with the seller. What he sold it for is what it is worth (to you anyway). Certainly not a lot unless it is a running and complete motor. Condition is everything.

If you are not a collector/restorer, or want to be, better walk away.

As stated above if you want to buy it and restore it over many months than go for it. If you are looking to buy it to use it as an every day motor than it would have no practical application. You will need to spend a lot of time just trying to hunt down parts for it and those parts will be at a premium because there aren't many still out there.

Looks like the controls and everything are there. Motor looks complete from the pics. Ask the simple 1 question that everyone ask's " When did it run last ". If it was recently, see if they can run it for ya and see how it sounds. I had a 67 Scott/McCulloch and it was a CHARM. Ran like a scalded dog.

I do intend to restore it, in order to put it on a boat I'm restoring (a 1966 Starcraft Jupiter), and I have a contact in New York who has all the parts necessary. I guess my real question is: where can I find real info about it, has anybody run one to know just how nice it is, and how do I estimate worth? Is it like you said that old motors like this have only personal value and aren't worth anything to collectors?

Re: 1962 Scott Atwater "Royal Scott" 43.7hp Value?

I have run them back when they were new, since I worked for a Scott Service dealer. They were a fairly decent motor, but not as good as the "Big Three". As somebody already said, they were pretty fast. The big guys always tried to discredit the little guys, telling everybody they were junk, can't get parts etc., etc. Of course, the intended reason for the bad talk was selling their own motors. Worked pretty well because Scotts never did sell well. Oh, and another thing----older models had a deserved terrible reputation for water pump problems. But that was fixed on the ones you are looking at.

I happen to have a 1947 Scott 3.5hp. Still runs perfect.

Since you are interested in restoring it, I'd say go for it, if you are up to the challenge. It's something different than what everybody else has. Did you follow the links I posted?

BTW, I really hate to give a value opinion, but I'd guess $150. But I really have no clue because I haven't paid any attention to what they are bringing. Besides, I'm cheap and have no boat for it. Again, ask the Scott Guy (link).

What's it combined with? Sorry, I couldn't help myself. Seriously, it is listed as a 1962 "Custom Royal Scott" with a note that it was used on a Scott Boat. That's all I know. Heck, I didn't realize Scott was in the boat building business. Hey, I have an excuse, I was in the US Army in 1962. Drafted!!
