I have recently obtained a 1962 sea king 3hp motor and I am having trouble with it and need some answers. First off, when I recieved the motor I took it apart and lubricated everything and checked the spark plug, impeller, and put lower unit fluid in it. I took it out a few times and it worked fine. Today when I used it I cranked it up and ran it for 30 seconds or so and noticed that there was no water coming out of the shaft vents, or below them, which it had done before. The engine got extremely hot so I shut it off. I tried several times to crank it and let it idle hoping to flush anything out that could be blocking the water from coming out, with no success. My question is that I have read a few other posts about using the wrong oil/grease to lubricate and it making the impeller swell and stop wotking. Could this be my problem ? There is some dark oily stuff that has come out of the vents on the shaft. Hopefully someone will be able to help me as I am not very fluent in this motor and need some help . Thanks.

The dark oily stuff is the oil that you put in the gas. Every drop of it goes through the engine to lubricate it. Some of it gets burned (smoke) and the rest goes out the exhaust to make you worry about it. So, don't worry, it's normal.

Oil definatly will destroy the impeller (properly called a "rotor"). How long does it take??? Good question. Check it for fit. It should fit closely on the eccentric and have a space on one side. The space moves around as it wobbles in the cavity.

I believe there is a water intake in the prop there is a slim chance
a mud dauber built a nest in there. The lower unit uses grease present day type I believe is libriplate 105.There is a chance the oil you used has caused the rotor to swell.I wonder if it might shrink back if allowed to sit in the sun for a few days.Though its best to replace it.

iamhendrix, when you were searching, did you see my comments about the goofy seal setup on those motors? The lube bypasses the seal. I modify all of mine to prevent that.

I took the prop off and the impeller is swolen , I am going to look up the goofy seal set up because I would prefer for this not be an ongoing problem. Any idea where I can get a new impeller ?

Re: 1962 sea king 3hp question

Thanks a lot for the impeller info, but I would like to know more about how to seal it so I dont have to deal with this again, i have looked in old posts but did not see anything about it, if you could send me a link to one I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks again for everything.

The way the factory built them, the prop shaft seal is pressed into the prop shaft bushing. The bushing is made of Oilite. Oilite is a great bearing material because it is porous and soaks up lubricant. That is why an electric motor will run for years with no re-lubrication.

Back to the issue at hand, since the seal is pressed into a porous material, the grease goes through the bushing, right past the outside of the seal.

What I do is press the bushing out of the housing and cut 1/4" off the end of it. Then I press a larger seal directly into the housing instead of into the bushing. That provides a positive seal around the outside of the seal.

I have done several with good results. However, I am still looking for the perfect seal to use. There is none made that will fit the housing. So, I have to fabricate a spacer to reduce the diameter of the housing down to the diameter of the seal. Easy for me to say because I have a metal cutting lathe. Not so easy if you don't have a lathe.
