1962 Starflite 75hp Electric shift 50930
I have an OEM parts manual and a Seloc repair manual.
I've pulled the LU.
I'm having trouble identifying a few parts.
For the seal between the lower and upper gearcases, the 1962 parts book calls out a circular o-ring #307103. This same o-ring is part of the Sierra 18-2689 Seal kit that should be good for years 1960-1968.
The LU on my engine has a non-circular o-ring. See photo. I don't know whether this is a completely different o-ring (different LU), or if it is actually the 307103 circular o-ring that has simply "memorized" the shape of the groove in the gearcase. Can anyone clarify this for me?
As you can see in the next picture, my water pump housing takes a grommet-style seal instead of the 305468 bushing called out in my parts book. Likewise, my water pump housing is a 3-holer instead of a 2-holer.
The 3rd hole is recessed for a grommet, but in my motor, there was no grommet there at disassembly. Rather, the shift cables were passing through that 3rd hole, as seen in the next photo.
This water pump housing is stamped 312 459-1, and the grommet is stamped 312460. I've been unable to locate any info on these part numbers. Anyone have any idea what they are or what they're from? Will a Sierra 18-3005 impeller work in this housing, or do I need a different impeller?
It's pretty obvious that my water pump isn't a perfect match for my gearcase, and my LU isn't a perfect match for my engine. But they work in the water.
My goal is to seal up the LU and have fun without breaking the bank. I need to order seals and o-rings and gaskets, but before I do, I need help identifying components so I can be sure I'm getting the right parts.
I also need advice. If there are parts in here that are completely unacceptable, then I'll change them. Should I replace the remaining outlet water pipe bushing with a grommet, or leave it be? Are the bushings something that should be replaced every teardown, or are they good for a while? Grommets = same question: replace every time, or good for a while?
As you can see in the photos, i haven't yet pulled the bearing housing off the top of the upper gearcase. The bearing seems fine. Should I pull the bearing hosuing and replace that seal anyway, just to cover all the bases?
Lastly, a couple of photos of my impeller housing plate. The surface is smooth, but it has some slight wear marks that have been established over time. Is this normal, or do i need a new plate?
Thanks!
