I am new, so please be gentle... Ihave a 40 horse 1963 Evinrude Big Twin, and I am new not only to the site, but to the boating community too. The boat has a broken drive shaft, and it is a repeating problem. It has broken several shafts, but everything appears to be just fine in the lower end. Every time it breaks down near the water pump. Can anyone tell me why this happens? also can anyone tell me where to get quality replacement parts at a reasonable cost?

More than likely, the midsection of the motor is bent. This misalignment causes the driveshaft to flex, which will break it. It will continue to break driveshafts until it is fixed.

Well that sounds logical... How would i go about fixing it? I verified the model number with evinrude to find out that it was a 40 hp '63, and the previous owner thought it might have been a 30 horse. If they had gotten a shaft from a 30 hp evinrude big twin, could that be the problem?
