I am checking out a motor that was given to me. The model # is: 40373 DB
So far I have'nt found any excessive wear when I pulled the lower unit to check a few things. So, here's what I need help with:

1) I have searched the forums and found a few different post on electric shift. None seem to relate directly to my model. I have two wires (green and blue) exiting the LU. As I spin the input gear by hand the gears inside the LU just spin. Is this not supposed the lock into forward with no voltage to either wire (as a fail safe)?

2) If not, how does the selectric shift work on my motor? (Green FWD, Blue RVS?)

3) There is a mounting bracket at the top of the engine. It looks similar to the starter bracket but there is nothing currently installed here. Possibly something driven by the flywheel goes here. Am I missing a part?

4) SCEMATICS please! I have'nt gotten my maintenance manual yet and I'll need to rewire this thing.

5) The remote control looks pretty dicey as far as the shifting switch goes. What are my options here? The switch appears to work according to my ohmeter, but have no way to know if it is right. If necessary, can I wire in another kind of switch. If so, how can I retain the safety interlock?

6) What other kinds of tests can I do initially? I have a compression tester (lower unit removed but power head is complete on my stand), dial calipers, etc. I just want to ascertain the condition of this motor before commiting to it.

Thanks for your help in advance!
I know this is a lot, but I just want to ascertain the condition of this motor before commiting money to it.

I have a 1964 40hp selectric shift.
On my lower unit
no voltage is neutral
12 v to green is forward
12 v to blue is reverse
voltage has to remain applied or it goes back in to neutral.
That spare bracket might be for the generator.
It runs off a belt off the flywheel on my unit.
To control the shift if your switch is busted you would need a double pole triple throw toggle switch of some kind.
As for compression, mine is around 120 psi but I think at least 100 psi is good. Both cylinders should be within 10 psi of each other or you might have some piston problems.
Check if you have spark at the plugs first.
Overall I found the motor relativally easy to work on and parts, Gaskets and seals were easy to find.
Good luck!

Thanks!
I just ohmed them out and I think they're gonna be OK.
Here's what I found:
blue to chasis ground about 8 ohms
green to chasis ground about 8 ohms
green to blue about 16 ohms
this makes sense if they're both hooked to chasis ground...the resistance adds in series, right?

About that possible missing part. I called a shop and they said it might be an extra starter mounting part. Can anyone clarify? Or maybe send a picture?

Starter is on the starboard side and the generator is on the port side and is driven by a toothed belt.

OK, it seems that I may be missing a generator. Is this to keep the battery topped off, or is it required to make the engine run? I think that this engine has been run for quite a while wothout and generator. Could it be an option that my motor did not come with?

Thanks Again!

yep, bracket is for generator, no you don't need to have it, yes it was an optional extra that our motors could have fitted. If you want one, there should be plenty available from an outboard wrecker or try I-Boats, failing that, there's always E-Bay. Philippeleblanc is correct on the shift wiring. Generally these motors are pretty good, personally I think they are always worth getting going, any Q's you have, just ask, also worth doing a search on the forum for "evinrude 40hp" it will bring up many posts that probably cover any thing you need to know. Good luck with it.

Thanks Lark! I went today to get my title transferred and get the paperwork trail started. Next I'll get a manual!

Would anyone happen to have an electrical schematic?
