I just bought and older model ranger boat (First Boat) with a '63 model 40hp Johnson. First time I put it in the water I realized the prop was spun. I bought another prop and as soon as I put it in the water it spun too. Any idea what would cause it to keep spinning the prop? Thanks in advance for the help!

Are you sure the prop is spun.Did you draw a waterproof line across the hub and do a test run?
If your dealing with used props itb wouldn't be too surprising to have 2 spun hubs.
Is it electric shift?

Yes I did the line and they did not line up after test run on both props. As far as if it is electric shift I have no idea. This is my first boat and I know very little about them. Thanks!

You have to put it in water deep enough so that the prop doesn't hit bottom! :)

Seriously, it may be possible that the prop is missing a thrust washer or some similar piece of hardware behind it that's allowing the hub to be damaged when you tighten it to the shaft. I can't claim to be intimately familiar with the '63 Johnson configuration.

Other than that, you sure have some bad luck with props!

My family had a 66 33HP motor and it spun one prop in 40 years and that was when a stick got wedged under it and it tore the rubber hub apart. The damage was pretty obvious.
Those old motors has shear pins. Is the shear pin in good shape or perhaps missing?
The hubs on those props are pressed and glued in. It could be the glue dried out and let go.

Are these used props. If electric shift it would have push buttons with a throttle lever.
If they are used props they could be rehubbed but I think I would find a new one.
