Hi, I have a 1963/4 Evinrude Lightwin 3hp that was my Great Granddads. It goes on his 1940 Starcraft that I inherited about 10 years ago. It’s been a few years since it’s been started but I’m looking to get it going again this spring. I have to replace the spring in the starter assembly first. My main question is what oil would be the best to run in it? Previously we ran Evinrude XD30 in it. I wanted to run the Evinrude XD100 Full Synthetic, but it seems as its for direct injection only. Would the Evinrude XD50 be the best? Anything else I should do during the tuneup?

Thank you,

any good brand tcw3 will do fine

I believe xd50 is semi synthetic and has some carbon inhibitors

check for good sparks... 3/8 inch if not redo electricals

change the impeller
clean the carb and run some engine cleaner like Merc Power tune

If it was stored with a bit of gas in the tank, chances are there are varnish deposits -- fresh fuel may be the solution, depending how bad they are. The gravity feed valve that supplies fuel to the carb may need cleaning (best to avoid handling the small gas strainer, as it can disintegrate.)

First step after dumping any old gas is probably to fill with a fresh mix and see if the valve is working as it should. If so, leave it alone.

Any Tcw3 will be fine. Use non-oxy (non-ethanol) gas if available. Ethanol-laced fuel stores poorly and tends to gums up the fuel system. I run all 3’s (‘52-‘68) at 32/1 fuel mix.. some will argue that’s not enough oil (pre ‘64), or too much (newer models), but it works for me.
