i have a 1963 evinrude lightwin 3HP outboard the model is 3302S. i am trying to change the lower gearcase lube and the guy at the marina sold me some OMC HI-VIS Gearcase Lube. Is this the right stuff to use, or do i have an electric shift gearcase. thanks for the help.

gboston,

That's the right stuff. Don't forget to change the fill/drain plug seals!

the only place i could find to fill it was a screw marked "oil level" when i popped it out the oil just started coming out. I didn't see a seal here, is this what you are talking about. I was just going to fill it back up in the same spot. I plan on getting a service manual for my motor as soon as i get the money (im a poor college student) thanks for the help

Most Motors have a Fill/Drain screw at the bottom and a Vent screw at the top, on the bottom of the lower unit. You would remove the vent screw, then the drain screw. You fill it through the Drain Screw(Bottom) until it comes out of the Vent(Upper)Screw. Then install the vent Screw, with new seal on the screw and quickly remove the container at the fill hole and install that screw, also with a New seal(Washer or O-Ring).

gboston,

The seals are attaced to the screws. They may be stuck in the housing. They resemble O'Rings, yet arer made of nylon.

They're CHEAP! You can get a handful for a couple of buck$.

djohns19,

I can get those at the local hardware store right? Or are they made of some kind of professional marine grade stuff? Thanks again

gboston,

No, they're not the same thing. Even at a boat/engine dealer-they're cheap.

I wouldn't pay more than $0.50 a piece. Even at that price, they're taking advantage of you.
