1963 Fastwin overheating (18hp)

I attached some muffs over the exaust housing inspection plate, ran the motor and it pumped water well, engine stayed strong. Stuck a garbage can underneath, and it didn't pump much water at all, eventually ceased up after a couple minutes of running.

Recently replaced the impeller, thermostat and seal, my only solution is to get a water pump housing kit. could there be an inlet plugged up, b/c it pumped well when the muffs were on the exaust housing?

There is no way to run this motor on muffs, it needs to be in a barrel or garbage can with water at least 3/4 the way up the lu.
Had a water pump go out on my '59 Fast Twin. Ran hot and siezed up. When it cooled down, staqrted and ran fine. Took a long time to get back to the landing. Replaced pump impeller and everything else in there, and ran the motor for another 5 years.

Speaking of overheating. Am new to boats. I have a 1989 Evinrude 40hp and squirts plenty of water but am concerned about the overheat warning not working. Should the water from the tell tell be warm or not and can i put my hands somewhere on block to check if hot or warm or what?

your motor seized up? Probably better take a compression check after that. When the sieze up like that, it's likely that your pistons got some nice scoring action.
