hello all,
i have a problem...i installed my new water pump that I found at my local napa stores...it matched exactly. now when I start my motor, the exhaust spits water....kind of like when you have water in a compressed air system or something. When my motor is in the water well above the water pump level but not up to my exhaust level, i get a lot of disturbance in the water when the boat is idling in neutral..almost like bubbles. I know that the prop is not causing this because when I put it in gear it changes and water rushes like it should...Here is my thought: Could water be bypassing the engine all together(all but the small amount being spitted) and blowing back out of the hole in the foot. The reason that I am wondering this is because when I replaced the pump I noticed that the previous owner had a rubber contraption glued to the end of the feeder tube that goes to the top of the engine...when I pulled the tube out, it fell out and I figured it was not enough seeping through to cause a problem so I did not replace it... could this be my problem...thanks you guys have been a big help.
wclark

Re: 1963 gale 25hp cooling problems...

That sounds like the grommet that seals the output of the water pump to the water tube. Mine was messed up when I removed the foot, and I had to make a new one to seal that fitting. Made mine out of fuel line hose, but only because I couldn't find a new one locally. For mine, if that seal were missing, I think it would do about what yours is doing. There needs to be a tight seal between the water pump outlet and water tube. Good luck.

Hi Wclark
There is a rubber grommet in the top of the pump housing that seals the lower end of the supply tube. The top of this tube is sealed by a compression type fitting consisting of a rubber gland and gland nut. To replace this top seal you will need to remove the power head in order to gain access to the gland nut. The lower water tube grommet should be very easy to come by new. The rubber glad for the top may be another story. You my need to make one. OMC part#304026 or Napa/Sierra part#18-3332 is the lower grommet. OMC part#7-170 is for the gland.

You do not have to open the crankcase. You will have to disconnect some hoses and wires. you will also need a new power head to exhaust housing gasket. Be prepared for stuck and broken screws. Try to get a manual if you can. The library may have a copy in the reference section. They may not have info for your exact model, but info on late 50's to early 60's 25-30hp OMC motors would help. The library will usually have some older generic Outboard repair manual. The guy's here can usually help with some of the fine points.

I don't know about the Gale 25hp engines as well, but the '63 28hp johnny/rudes had their water tubes cast or pressed in place, rather than having a helpful mechanical attachment. Replacing it may be tricky.

The powerhead is held on by 9 bolts from below and two nuts at the front of the engine above.
