Alright, first off the motor is a '63 Gale 25hp manual shift. Has magneto ignition system, pull start & has a starter. The P/O did a hack job with the wiring from a Johnson control box and had the cut off switch wired presumably as the lights, and the flip switch as the starter. I want to try and go back to the most basic system it had with the following wiring diagram, but I have a few questions as to how I can get this all to work correctly. Currently the power-head is on my engine hoist and the only wires coming from it seemingly come from the magneto and they are two black wires. It crank and run just as it sits hooked to nothing. Heres the diagram in a Gale manual I found:

I've got the starter solenoid, however the motor has NO choke, and as far as I know doesn't have a mercury switch that I've seen? How can I apply this diagram to my situation, in my terms it leaves the magneto wires unaccounted for, and what type of "start Button" will I need? Won't it need to be multiple functions, energize starter, then off etc.. I know the VERY basics of wiring (It might not seem that way) but I just need a logical solution to simply wire the motor to use the starter when need, and be able to turn it off haha. Leaving the whole control box out of the picture and getting new swtiches, maybe even a simple key switch. Thanks in advance guys!

First the two black wires are to stop the engine .they are joined by the two MM terminals on a marine igniton switch.
The mercury switch is not appropriate its to stop you running the motor with high tilt...

The starter circuit bit is fine but you usually have a +ve feed to your igniton switch and a wire from the S terminal to the solenoid.
Be carefull if buying a switch there are two sorts one for battery igniton and one for magneto ..look for the two M M connections ..come back if you need more help

Re: 1963 Gale 25hp rewiring questions

hi,
i just rewired my boat from scratch - maybe this will help
1 i did not have a key start switch so i bought a basic power switch with push start switch like this ebay item number:180830162717
2 i have + power lead from battery connected to this switch (to use as shutoff) for all my switches and then to switches
3 all switches are taking power from this battery master switch so be sure it will take the current
4 engine start push button switch takes power from master switch after switch is turned ON and then to starter solenoid
- remaining lead from solenoid goes back to negative bus board
5 all - negative wires go to a common ground(negative) bus bar and then back to battery
6 battery + positive goes directly to solenoid and then to starter - while the negative goes DIRECT to engine earth

all works fine for me
as for the choke - well my electric choke is not working so i have not connected the wire as not needed - you can set this manually on the carb if/when required
mercury switch - disregard if not installed
you said you have 2 wires hanging out - is it 1 coming from the magneto and onefrom the vacuum switch on left side ? - these are the engine cutout wires and if you have the correct switch they go to m+m but if not you can set them on a toggle switch to do the same job(when switched to OFF they will ground the magneto's and shutoff the engine - when switched to ON the wires are (actually in OFF positionas i have them reversed) not connected therefore not grounding the magneto's)
hope this helps you out
