Hello, i have recently found out that my motor is not running full throttle so i did some research and found out my throttle sync isnt correct so i tried adjusting it and now the carb looks to open wot like it should but the idle screw has to be adjusted. Before when u turned up the idle screw to make it idle fast enough the timing linkage would turn too far and prevent you from being able to shift in or out of gear, it would also not want to rev up in neutral it acted as if u wernt pushing the throttle forward and now it revs up pretty high in neutral, so now ive had to back off the idle screw and the shifting is no longer an issue but my question is how exactly do i know if it is in sync corectly? and being how the carb didnt open up all the way before would that affect performance alot due to the timing to throttle being diferent? the motor ran smoooth before i just couldnt ever get it to idle fast enough due to the linkage not allowing me to shift. Im just nervous about testing on the water u know.

Re: 1963 gale 40hp throttle sync??

1st - Engine NOT running... spin prop by hand/foot and put into forward gear... Apply throttle until armature plate under flywheel is just up against its full spark advance stop... now, loosen the set screw in the barrel that slides on the rod between the vertical throttle arm and the carburetor roller... slide that barrel up against the rod guide that the rod slides thru and tighten the set screw.

Adjusted as above, advancing the throttle more should advance the throttle butterfly to open fully.

2nd - In the water, engine running....... Adjust the carburetor as follows.

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Thanks the low and highspeed are already set good but ill check the sync again like u said, do u think it will have any more power or top speed sence the throttle was only opening 7/8. btw the way i adjusted it was by turning the plastic screw on the brass throtle knob coming out of the carb enough to allow the butterfly to open all the way.
