1963 Johnson 3hp Help :(

Hi,

I'm working on a 1963 3hp Johnson outboard motor and just changed the water pump and noticed underneath the impeller housing there was some salt buildup in the veins. I decided to take the head gasket off to check the water passages out; 3 of the 6 bolts came out but the other 3 broke off right below the bolt head. If I can get the head off, I should have a lot of bolt exposed but I can't get the head off. I have the motor on its back with PB Blaster sitting in the bolt holes. I've been hitting it with a rubber mallet with no luck. I have 2 broken bolts on the bottom cylinder left side and 1 broken bolt on the bottom cylinder right side. How can I get this head off???

There are extractor devices for broken head bolts. They sort of resemble drill bits, only are spun in the reverse direction. You drill a hole in the middle of the broken bolt and then screw the extractor in as far as possible. Check you local auto parts store.

Soak everything in penetrating oil for a day or two before trying this. That is also good advice for avoiding this problem in the future.

Don't use any screw extractors 'cause if you break one off your can't drill them out. I'd try some ATF and Actone mixed up 50/50 and use that. Also some heat would help. Try a steel hammer rather than a rubber mallet as the steel hammer will shock the area better.
