Hey guys - I'm NEW. (You'll really see this as you read on :) )

I just bought a 12 foot aluminum fishing boat for smaller lakes and portaging around in Ontario. It came with a 1963 3HP Johnson which is in almost MINT condition. Really unbelievable how good of shape it is in for being 46 years old.

It had been sitting for 7-8 years and the owner was told it didn't run by one of his friends who borrowed it. Long story short, I cleaned it up, stuck it in a trash can full of water and it started on the second rip.

This is the first motor I've actually owned, although I've been around boats off and on my whole life, they've never been my own.

Are there parts available for this motor still? If so - how do I know what is interchangeable and what isn't?

If they aren't still available, should I just be trolling ebay for deals on them when they are available and stocking up?

Also - I've had a hard time finding a repair manual for them. I may have just looked in the wrong place, but seems like the ones I've seen exclude a HP so small, all seem to start at 10 or something.

If I've missed a FAQ (I looked, I promise) on this, just let me know.

Thanks in advance.

That is one of the most successful motors ever built and they made them with few changes for many years. So, don't worry about parts. You would be surprised at how much stuff is still available from Evinrude dealers, and there are common aftermarket parts available all over.

Reprints of the factory service manual are available from www.outboardbooks.com

Are the Orings for the gas cap and release valve (located on the cap) included in the carb kits, or are they separate parts?

They need replaced immediately. Can I just get the sizes of them from somewhere and pick them up at a hardware store or is there something special about them?

The carburetor kit includes carburetor parts, not gas cap parts. Seriously though, the vent gasket is not available as a separate part because the cap doesn't come apart without breaking the chain off. That means you are supposed to buy a whole cap. Part number 375514 cap includes 307538 gasket, available separately. It is a flat rubber washer, not an o-ring. But I suppose an o-ring might work (?).

See, that's what I'm talking about. Thanks for the info, I'm just a noob who knows nothing. Haha, had no idea I should just buy a new gas cap.

Thanks for the info, I'm sure more Newbyness to follow.

Thanks
