Hi Guys, new to boating here. I have a 1963 Johnson 40hp Electromatic, RK-25D. It runs well and functions in reverse. When putting it in forward I get nothing, it just limps along, then randomly it will kick into gear and function. If I put it back to neutral and then forward again I lose it...

A 60-year-old motor likely has rotted electrical wiring. Not only that, but the electric cable going down to the lower unit is often burned/deteriorated. And of course, there is the shift switch in the remote control.

An orderly troubleshooting is required.

Agreed with the above.-----I for one think that these electric shifts are wonderful , simple .----But yes inspect the wiring.----Those units require a gear oil ( type-C ) specified for use in electric shift.

Yes, the wiring is a bit weathered looking. I’ll order a new one and replace the oil. At least that’s a place for me to start. Thanks guys.

The RK series gear case is extensively covered in the Johnson service manual (500 pages +) available for free download to members of AOMCI
in the "members only section" library under GarrySpencer's drop box
here is a example...
