Pretty scared right now. put muffs and garden hose on her and turned the water all the way up. She fired and ran but no water was coming out in the stream like it is peeing. What am I doing wrong? I hope to god I did not melt the pump. Please, I am very new to boats but I got her to run. I stuck on the muffs and ran the water at the highest. But why is she not peeing?

The water pump is brand new too! I feel like I put the muffs on wrong or something stupid...but not sure what.

Thank you so much.

run a thin piece of wire up the pee hole into the rubber hose and clear the dirt without stuffing it in . if the motor is running hot you can feel it with your hand (careful near the flywheel), make sure the muffs cover the water inlet holes

How long did you let it run? If your motor has thermostats, it won't pee until they reach opening temp.

What is your engine s/n?

First of all it is an older engine. It should not have a thermostat.

You do not need to have the water hose running at full pressure, just enough to supply a good volume of water to the pump, Some houses put out tremendous pressure.

Why did you change the impeller and what was the condition of the one you removed? Were the vanes all intact?

Are you in salt or fresh water?

I really appreciate all the help.

The muffs are definitely covering the water inlet holes. It ain't an air-tight seal (is it supposed to be?) but it nearly is.

I let it run for about a minute.

Thank you Gerry.

It is a 1963 Mercury 500/50 HP Serial#1556937.

Our last boating trip was in salt water.

The impeller was not cracked but we saw some signs of wear and erosion of the fins. Vanes=fins? If so, vanes were all intact. I recollect thinking that the old impellers were in pretty good shape, but we replaced them anyways.

Well if you have or can make a fitting to fit the Flush plug, you could try that to see if you have any flow. What condition were the other parts in, housing, insert etc. At this stage, I think I would have a look at that impeller again and make sure the key is installed, the vanes are trailing when the d/s is turning CW and that you have the long water tube inserted in the base of the engine.
