Anyone know someone in the chicagoland area that would be interested in working on my motor? I would like to have the standard work done that is suggested (Compression, Spark, Carb Rebuild, Impeller, Pump, Idle adjustment, etc..) but I am not good with engines, or at least have no knowledge about them. Looked all over the local libraries for books on how to do this stuff and couldn't find exactly what I needed. Was going to be willing to try and take my time but need illustrations or really good directions. Tough when I dont know my way around a motor to follow along!

The engine runs great at high speed but idles rough and spits and drips a lot of unburned fuel after pulling it out of the water. Feel bad to be poluting water like that if the same amount is coming out in the water. I have changed the spark plugs, changed the lower unit oil and that is about it. Really dont want to pay the $95 per hour to a marina for tuneup. Tuneup might end up costing more then motor is even worth. This motor is new to me this year and duck season is about over. Want to get it cleaned up and updated with new parts for next year! Thanks for any replies.

Start by getting the factory service manual for that engine.
You need the model number.
www.outboardbooks.com

then order the carb rebuild kit, its very simple, water pump is simple too.
I'm not a mechanic and I did it.

Magneto's aren't bad to work on either. Just need a cheap puller to get the flywheel off to get at the guts. If you get 1/4" consistent blue spark w/tester, you're good. There are tons of threads on this site w/most any info you may need. Just search under 'johnson/evinrude repair' and don't forget the 'top secret files'. If you have a work area, and time, you'll likely find it rewarding doing it yourself. You'll probably be responding to my head-scratcher questions by spring! haha

The biggest problem with these motors are that people make them more complicated than they really are. If you can change plugs and lu gear oil, you have plenty of skill to rebuild carb, replace points coils, ect.

As said above, a puller with grade 8 bolts, a spark tester (just looking at the spark of the spark plug isn't going to tell how good the spark is) a compression tester and a service manual.

Do some shopping at Harbor Freight.

You are good to go.

I wholeheartedly agree, and what you learn about your motor will be valuable as far as keeping your other engines in good shape in the future. That carburetor is not like a car's, and is totally simple to work on. If you decide to do it, however, I'd NOT remove the high speed orifice plug since it's running good on high speed and since you can booger it up unless you have the proper tool. A flathead screwdriver will NOT get it out!:)
A good motor you have, and one that can teach you a lot since it's so simple.
GOod luck,
JBJ
